What is everyone's thoughts on Blackstar? Initial impression is that it was much better than I expected from a 67 year old Bowie. Need to listen again once higher quality versions are available.

He's doing something new and exciting for the first time since Outside. Not only that, but this is his most focused and unique effort since Low. Bowie has released excellent tracks on almost every record since Ashes to Ashes but I think this is his first album since to match or even top that album since its release. In fact I'll put Blackstar above several of his 70's efforts too such as Diamond Dogs and Man Who Sold the World. As a singlular expression, Blackstar ranks as one of Bowie's best. Easily top 10 Bowie.

If it weren't for those creases under his nose, he could pass for about 45-50.
After the 80s, every single album that came out people said is his best effort since scary monsters. This is definitely his best since then. It's more focused than a lot of his works since scary monsters and has matured a lot. It usually takes bowie a while to build up to a "great" album. That was the way for ziggy and low. Here's my ranking of his albums.
S - Low, Ziggy Stardust
A - Station to Station
A - Hunky Dory, Heroes, Scary Monsters
A- - Aladdin Sane, Young Americans, Lodger, Blackstar
B+ - The Man Who Sold the World
B - Diamond Dogs, The Next Day, Heathen

It's not terrible but it will sound a lot better when it's out. Listening to the already released versions of Blackstar and Lazarus the dip in quality is quite noticeable.
