Saw em twice in '13, really fun stuff. First time was excellent, the second time was a little more boring but none the less great, the crowd was more boring that time around.
>If not, what's your favorite bootleg?
Either their acoustic recordings from 03-04 or the Starlight Ballroom in 06, probably the best representation of their guitar and electronics period

These are actually awesome write ups.
From the first one:
>There is something exceptionally magical about this band. Animal Collective is THE band of the moment for a reason: They are somehow able to tap into primitive places that lie within all of us but dissipate over time. They are bringing it back, y'all, bringing us back to feelings we once knew as kids but had no idea how to express at the time. But the freaky part is, we still don't--and probably never will--know how to intellectualize those emotions and feelings Animal Collective induces. If it sounds like I'm riding these guys' dicks, it's because I am, literally. Kiddin! But honestly, this performance rekindled my love for music in the same way Prefuse 73 made me remember how amazing hip-hop was just a couple years ago. This show was truly an uncontrived, needed catharsis for all in the audience.
>>
>>61326407
>But when they had a rhythm, it was something else. The band would turn into a ferocious beast and the noise they created rose out of the energy of the beat. It was how I always wanted noise rock to be: a flash and fury of energy and chaos bursting from a shell of structure. Animal Collective ended their set in a crash of a song that included a group chant, various animal noises, and more onstage dancing than I've ever seen a band do before. They were cheerleaders for youthful innocence, and their set confirmed my previous notions about the band: they do something great that no one else can match.

Glad someone enjoyed these write ups. I'm just trying to understand the context with which the band lived in around that time in indie music. Aside from the pitchfork reviews, I'm always trying to find out how people felt about them before they were big (or critically acclaimed by many people). It's cool to see people say things like "highly original", "acid friend", and "noise pop" because they really were the only band to take from the past and filter it through their own lens AKA sounding like how they sound. For instance listen to STGSTV and other psych pop bands. Exactly

This set is just amazing. The intro to Peacebone is fucking killer.
>Favorite era of the group?
Feels era probably.
>Most underrated album?
I'd say Spirit They're Gone. Merriweather brought a lot of newcomers closer to Strawberry Jam-era AnCo than pre-Sung Tongs, even Feels. It's a shame their early stuff isn't so popular outside of /mu/.
>>
>>61327175
No problem, love animal collective. There was a string of amazing AnCo generals back when I started coming here and that's where I discoverered and discussed so much of their music. Just keeping the tradition alive.
>>61327284
The Malta fest has my favorite camera work of any concert footage (excluding live at Pompeii, nothing beats that movie).

You'd be surprised what musicians obsess over other musicians, and end up making music that sounds nothing like their obsessions. For instance
>Britt Daniel of Spoon loved Robert Smith and The Cure
Sounds nothing like the cure
>Radiohead was heavily influenced by The Pixies
They didn't even sound like the pixies on their early demos
>Animal Collective was hugely influenced by Pavement
Their Automone ep from when they were 15 sounds like a pavement b side

The only group I can think of that didn't shake the influence (whether it was intentional or not) was Pavement listening to the fall. Slanted sounds like the fall with distortion and sarcasm yet works exceptionally well.

>The only group I can think of that didn't shake the influence
Coldplay and Muse instantly come to mind since you mentioned Radiohead.

I'd like to add to your first point though with Modest Mouse and Built to Spill. Both Isaac and Doug obsessed over each other's music but their bands sound nothing alike aside from some vague surface similarities at first glance.
>>
>>61328133
Coldplay just took the slow piano and ballad stuff from radiohead and watered it down to shit, then formed their own pop style. Muse took the stadium elements of radiohead and blew them to shit, and got worse...
>>
>>61328133
Oh yeah, modest mouse are a band that didn't really sound like anyone else but themselves (maybe polvo or lync)
>>
Anyone seeing them when they come to Detroit?
>>
>>61328133
There's less then 10 muse songs that sound even slightly radiohead. They sound more like RATM then Radiohead.
