>A Canorous Quintet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Asy-uMEu1A
Obscure Swedish melodeath with a hint of black metal influence that I've rec'd a few times. Melodic and catchy, but also abrasive, it's a great mix of the Gothenburg and Oslo scenes.

>Brainstorm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs2pXbk670E
A US power band from... Germany! Indeed, they are krauts but preform the style of American power metal much better than the likes of Iced Earth and Sanctuary. Mid-paced with AOR elements, but crushingly heavy, Brainstorm will appeal to Swanö fans.

>Ebonylake
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMWeIjeUwTQ
I'm not articulate enough to convey this madness. Despite it's association with avant-garde mall goth metal, it's a must listen.

>Glacier
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR00i1G_sXY
A true gem and the only major release from this band. Having been influenced by the NWOBHM scene, Glacier fucking shreds, though are admittedly on the unoriginal side. Think Liege Lord with an Ozzy sound-alike.

>Joseph Magazine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGYzF8o_r-U
A progressive metal band from Poland heavily influenced by Dream Theater and Riverside, but lacks a vocalist for the most part. It's extremely keyboard-heavy and relies upon atmosphere and samples to carry itself.

>Wrathchild America
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmk_IEh9QdE
Technical thrash that features a goddamn awesome bassist. Really, the whole band is great and they are severely underrated considering how well known Toxik and Xentrix were.

Other neat bands:
>Brothers Grimm, Childhood's End, Eumeria, Funeral, Hexenhaus and Jacobs Dream.

props for wrathchild america, i wouldn't quite call it tech but it's very tight, catchy, and original. no one would ever make a thrash album like it again because it's too soft for the retrokiddies.

just listened to brothers grimm and hexenhaus' awakening recently, both excellent.

>>
>>60835141
not at all. they harmonize in different ways, blue collar bands use many more power chords than a queensryche or a titan force, blue collar bands tend to syncopate more heavily like the crimson glory song posted before, the entire production and lyrical subject matter is different, etc
>>60835182
>the songwriting is very dispersive and impressionistic, and the use of keyboards and choral vocals is really odd. it feels like Unexpect if all the silly elements of their sound were removed (as well as the bass noodling)
i'm 10 minutes in and not hearing much in the way of keyboards or unexpect madness. lots of repeated dissonant chords over and over with moderately (but not outstandingly) busy drumming.

In reality, what's labelled as blue collar is what's viewed to have slightly more "balls" and what's labelled as white collar is more nerdy and possibly prog.

Both blue collar and white collar bands are already extremely similar and there are many instances of one band doing a song in the other style (like Crimson Glory's Red Sharks.)
>>
>>60835244
man, I haven't thought about that band in years. Yacopsae are great.
>>
>>60835350
yeah, i don't like like BDM or grindcore that much but this is just really nice and gritty
>>
>>60835361
red sharks is hardly blue collar. the riffing is too tight and harmonized; this is the kind of stuff that led to actual europower. nothing in common with, say, this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2YED90AEsI
>>
>>60835421
Nonsense the riffs are very similar. Both utilize fairly standard melodic chord progressions over 16th notes. Hell both songs even start off in practically the same way. The biggest musical difference is that Crimson Glory had some extra syncopation in the bass. Big deal. Give red sharks bad production and it'd sound like any other blue collar song.

>Cobalt

This band was quite the meme back in '09 because it's one of the few examples in which USBM doesn't suck. Apologies for the playlist and not full album.

>Consciousness Removal Project
https://consciousnessremovalproject.bandcamp.com/album/the-last-season
Atmospheric sludge meets Porcupine Tree synth. There's so many neat one-man band projects on Bandcamp like Dan Dankmeyer, Sithu Aye and this band.

>Desultory
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHcHHbSdGWs
Long-forgotten Swedish OSDM. This album is an absolute riff monster despite being so atmospheric at times.

>Electro Quarterstaff
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avAUIf5ts9A&list=PL9DFE94599E242DEC
Don't mind the lol sorandumb connotations, this band is a lot like Behold the Arctopus.

>Saviour Machine

yes, there are some similarities owing to both being uspm, particularly in their use of triplets and both being melodic. however, the brocas helm song is still less harmonized, has more trotting riffs as well (e.g. 0:40), and the changes in interval aren't nearly as rapid as in crimson glory.

>>
>>60835913
They have some very dissonant moments, especially on IAFA. The more busy parts of Chromatic Chimera, the end of Psychic Jugglers, Feasting Fools' first half...

The mathcore-y bits on Fables also have some dissonance, though I agree that that album is generally more melodic.

I compare them to Unexpect mostly because of the surreal/classical aesthetic. Ebonylake have weirder lyrics though. Actually can't think of many more bands with weirder lyrics - maybe Scholomance, Thought Industry, Terminally Your Aborted Ghost...

There is SO MUCH shit metalcore out there, but that reflects more readily on your lack of experience with the genre than its actual content.

heh, Drudkh and Walknut are very soulful. The former almost captures a similar intangible spirit of collective struggle to the early Mississippi blues men.
>>
>>60838200
I don't even have to, just go to any of the main black metal essentials charts and compare those albums to the metalcore essentials. Unless you just flat out dislike black metal in general, I think you're going to find that most of the metalcore album are fairly weak in comparison.

I know it. It's like this faggot has never even heard of Judge.

Metalcore from 2003-onward is a melodramatic glam teased sophomoric derivative of what the cool edgy metalcore bands in the mid-late 90s and early 2000s were doing.

It's so far removed from hardcore or its original roots.
>>
God I just frickin LOVE metal. The emotion and angst is just SO FRICKIN ME. Can anyone recommend something like Slipknot and Disturbed? They both sound HELLA FRICKIN EPIC.

The fashion in metal is up my alley too, anyone know the best way to wear strapped jeans and a barbedwire belt? People give me looks at lunch hour but I just remember I could FRICKIN DESTROY THEM especially if Im listening to Before I forget.

>>
>>60835032
Yo yo seem like the guy to ask this question of. Do you know this band !T.O.O.H.! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1bjf_hPHqk
There's some other band that's tangentially related, shared members I think, who's name I really want to try to remember. The music was much more piano-focused than !T.O.O.H.! and I think the name was some sort of pun or intentionally misspelled word, and might have begun with a D. Please Obi-Wan, you're my only hope.
>>
>>60839464
No. I'm saying Judge sounds nothing like metalcore. I don't think they're metalcore.

I think Integrity were really the first of the second wave of metalcore bands. I don't know if I would call Cro-Mags a metalcore band or the first wave of metalcore bands. That's a heated issue that will explode.

Anyway this is one of my favorite songs of all times.

people try really hard to say that crossover and crust are technically metalcore but cause it's metal-influenced hardcore but like hardcore was already metal influenced and that argument kinda just waters down the idea of metalcore as an actual genre

I like to write death metal/deathgrind with a viola that just goes wild. I try to keep them balanced with amount of riffage, or the viola sets the rhythm on some tracks. Because skinhead metal was always shit?

>>
>>60842774
I hated that album when it came out because I was a punk rocker who liked NYHC and disliked (as pretty much all punks did then) metal.

HC was already going metal with albums like Cause For Alarm by Agnostic Front and a lot of punks and HC kids weren't happy about it, and then along came that album - a bunch of metal fags taking HC and adding it to their sound and bringing a fanbase that we detested.

I've softened on Pantera since and no longer hate them but still find most Pantera fans douches and would rather hear straight NYHC (Judge, Sick Of It All) than their crossover metal shit

That's why it's fucking stupid to dismiss something as being a meme. It means absolutely nothing.

Right, about Voice of the Soul, it's good because it has a goal. It has a main idea it develops and it doesn't ruin it with drum and bass showboating or Chucks' vocals. It excises the good part of that album, the melodicism and atmosphere, and ignores everything else.
>>

If you take a step back and appreciate Pantera as a metal band converging on something new and different without looking at the stereotypes against them, then it's a really good album, but I don't think I would ever want to hang around the band in the early 90s as the guy I am today.

Phil today is pretty fucking cool though. It's like he let go of the whole southern rock star swag thing, and went back to his true hardcore roots. He's always been a true nerd when it comes to music, despite what many people who don't like him say, and he's actually a very smart and sophisticated guy when you look past his slurred speech and actually interpret what he's saying in many of his lyrics.

Dime, I can't say anything bad about. He was a fantastic guitar player capable of doing just about anything, and he was an excellent man to be around on all accounts.

There's nothing anyone can say negative about Rex Brown. For one thing he's just a complete enigma, and the most down to earth dude in the world. His bass sound was tight and phenomenally heavy. He doesn't seem like he has even a thread of ego.

Vinnie is the one guy in the band who I can't really appreciate. The guy is a fucking cash junkie and a complete ego maniac. He's completely shut himself off from the extreme metal scene, and buried the last 10 years of his career into an abysmal mud that deserves no respect either for its lack of quality or lack of authenticity. He could have moved on and done a number of amazing things as a producer and drummer for a great number of artists, but he can't let go of himself, and he keeps shoveling the same shit out of the gutter.
