1. neurobiology
I really appreciate the even more minimalist approach to dance music than a lot of footwork already is. the way that oftentimes a single sound is manipulated rhythmically is incredibly interesting. the final track with its almost chorale progression is also beautiful
2. brother
not to brag but I was one of the first people to post about this album here, and I've always had a close attachment to it. the improvisations never seem indulgent or careless mainly because Cohen is so experienced. it also goes all the way from ametric/rhythmic to a carefully developed sort of fantasia
3. baltika
it's like louis andriessen, bela bartok, and steve reich had a collab
4. product
didn't expect to like this at all, but the tracks have a real kick to them. rhythmic vitality is ultimately what makes it interesting: the stilted flow of Bipp for instance
5. xe
not better than New Slaves but a solid album from Zs so what's wrong with it?
6. dark energy
also stood up for this album since its release. like product there's a lot of drive from the stilted drums, and also a lot of atmosphere is gained from the voiceovers
7. the ark work
just ask me if you want to know
8. universal themes
it's like prog folk, I love how the music seems to fit every mood Mark is singing/venting about
9. simple songs
the perfect middle ground between Eureka and Insignificance
>>
>>60839804
I could've sworn that Jim O'Rourke album was a Schoolboy Q album, judging by the cover. What kind of music is it?

I've also never listened to a Zs album. Where should I start, and what should I expect?
>>
>>60839916
>What kind of music is it?
basically "dadrock" except super witty and cynical instead of corporate and soulless
also killer orchestrations
>Where should I start
no defined place
Xe if you want a more streamlined, "generic" release
New Slaves if you want a super experimental release
Arms if you want some fun shit
>and what should I expect?
basically like avant prog jazz rock? uncategorizable
>>
>>60840067
avant-prog jazz rock.

sign me up.
thanks, anon.

To cut it down to 10

Leprous
AOTY, Coal, but improved, fantastic choruses and syncopated guitar riffs
Wilderun
Think of more melodic Opeth with strong folk elements
Arcane
A massive double album with top tier prog metal on one side and atmosphetic soft rock on the other
Mew
Criminally underrated, the hooks and choruses are as strong as ever, just not as immediate
Paradise Lost
This is the album they should have made ages ago, excellent use of harsh and clean vocals
Riverside
Took time to grow on me, but this is a great atmospheric prog release
Steven Wilson
Fuck You I like it
Susanne Sundfor
Best pop album in recent years, great combination of chamber pop and synthpop
Anekdtoen
From all the modern bands trying to copy King Crimson, this one is proably the best
Richard Hawley
It's Richard Hawley, that means great lyrics, not much has changed ftom before

HM:
Jim O'Rourke
Solid as usual, but shit production
Elder
Great stoner doom, even better than Uncle acid this year
Caligula's Horse
With signer of Arcane, great melodic prog, but not as strong
My Dying Bride
Really solid gothic doom
Tempel
Just a huge dose of massive and great riffs
Amorphis
Extremely catchy with great senese of melody, big improvement over last 2 albums

yeah I can't recall why he chose such a small and quiet style
>>
>>60840159
yeah man they are sick. the title track is goat.
Komara is one under it
Cold Hot Plumbs - Damaged Bug is in the bottom left.

>>60840757
saw this in another thread. if you had to reccomend one of these albums, which one would it be?

>>60840522
I haven't checked out the Mew album, is it Frengers good?
>>

>>
>>60841783
Frengers is amazing, honestly the best indie pip album of the last decade
>>
>>60840757
That Graham Lambkin & Michael Pisaro collab is legit.
>>
>>60841783
>which one would it be
depends what genre you're into, but my favourite from these is Syny - Orient. You might not get the Polish lyrics though. if that puts you off, check out Macula Dog - it's 16 minutes long but perfect

This bad boy.

It hasn't gotten enough credit in people's AOTY lists, partly because it was released in January and partly (in my opinion) because Lupe's political views make him a controversial figure.

>Summertime '06
Favorite hip hop album of the year. Great vocals, and it's just much more compelling to me than TPAB is. Also, really, really catchy.

>Sprinter
One of the most intense albums I've listened to, with just hauntingly powerful vocals.

>Me
Really good pop album. Water Water blows me away. It's weird to explain, but it just feels so bendy and loose. Fucking great.

>Viet Cong
I'm not a post-punk fan, by any means, but this was really great. So atmospheric and brooding sounding, but really intriguing.

>Get To Heaven
I think it might be my AOTY. It's just so catchy and with great vocals and depth and meaning to match. Also, I love the falsetto.

>Foil Deer
Edged out No Cities To Love, because they just seem really similar rock albums. It just had more staying power to me.

>Ten Love Songs
This is the reason Get To Heaven isn't my clear AOTY. Brilliant idea: just really fucked up shit cleverly disguised as love songs.

>Choose Your Weapon
Most under-appreciated album of the year. Lot of groovy melodies, and genre-defying. Also, Swamp Thing and Borderline with my Atoms is great.

>Sometimes I Sit and Think
It's lost it's newness on me, but it's still got plenty of charm and I critics be damned, I love the deadpan vocal style.

I didn't put Sunbather on 2013 charts, because I didn't try to claim to care about black metal. I realized I was out of my comfort zone.

Xinlisupreme pretty much made a completely new type of noise pop album

The new Battles is incredibly dull aside from The Yabba, and the studio version sounds like ass compared to the live session they did that's on Youtube. Without guest vocalists (Yamantaka on Sundome is the best thing they've ever done IMO) or Tyondai the songs go absolutely nowhere.
