Why is he so based?
He is doing some pretty interesting things in guitar, but is not a good songwriter or improviser. Would make the greatest guitar teacher ever, but as a musician, eh, give it ten years.
For the record I quite like the first AaL album, but anything since then is just more of the same, but not as good.

I don't though, I like some djent, at least every now and again. I just hate musicians that care only about virtuosity and have no feel to back it. It's like a holdover from music school, the composer types who only compose and have no idea what sounds "good" without the context of theory
What are some bands like Animals as Leaders? I've tried other Djent but they all feature awful vocalists.

i saw them on the beginning of their recent joy of motion tour and they opened the set with the first three tracks off of the album. this was the most satisfying live show I have been to in years. to say there is no feeling behind this music is crazy. those three songs alone were overwhelming (sonically and emotionally) for me as a guitar/bass player.
let me guess though, you watched the CAFO video once and lumped them in with "djent" musicians. give their albums a chance, there is some great music there.
