I'll try to sound as less weeb as I can but what's the deal with japanese pop music? Is there any scale or common chord progression that they use? because theres some specific flavor that you can tell it's a japanese pop song that I don't hear in occidental pop music, here are come examples to explain what I mean

Without analyzing any of it myself,I understand that a lot of it is actually very derivative from Western Europop and classical music. That's not saying they don't have crack songwriters.

I don't know much about music theory, but it sounds like a common theme is having larger pitch difference between some notes than western pop music usually does
>>
Yeah I think their pop music is derivative of Western pop.

I play around with the Japanese scale on guitar though, and it definitely has the sort of Japanese flavor you mention, but it more reminds me of traditional Japanese music. I think some of it finds its way into pop music. Here's a random video on it so you can hear what I mean.

Don't know about chord progressions but I feel like Jap music always sounds a bit jazzier than western pop, and it might be influenced by the traditional Japanese scale.

I don't have a music theory background either by the way.

FASSSSSHION MONSTERRRRRR!
you got good taste anon, and you're totally right, theres definitely a 'specific flavour' to japanese pop music

I've been wondering this myself. There's gotta be something about the chords. I remember looking at this chord progression website with some ZUN tracks and I couldn't understand it, but I'm no wizard at music theory by any means. There was definitely some more complex harmony that basic chords in those tracks though (him writing drunk probably helps that)

This seems like a good place to ask, does anyone know what that super fast drop of the instrumental at for example 2:01 in this, is called, if anything? I think this trope is unique to modern J-pop but I could be wrong. I love the reinvigoration it brings to a chorus, although this one is certainly very energetic on it's own. The drums are kinda buried but it feels like a blast beat to me, which is great.

thanks I didn't which were its influences

seems energetic as fuck, as expected she has lots of outfits, hope she realeases a new album though
>>
>>66321394
yeah this one its like the epitome of what I'm wondering, from the verse to the chorus and it's in 2:01 onward what I mean, like I've heard similar passages in other songs that make me go: thats a japanese song, perfect example anon

Yeah she was so energetic and playful the whole night. She came here in 2014 too, but the venue was much smaller and a lot more indie? everything from the set to the lighting to the performance and sound was much better this time around. I can still remember the glowing white lights on her when she appeared on stage, it was surreal, she looked straight out of a magazine or something, i noticed how hard i was smiling and i wanted to chill tf out but i couldn't, the whole night was such a blast.
I'm a bit disappointed we haven't seen a new album, but her KPP BEST album will suffice for a little while (when i won the tix i also won a signed copy of the album! it'll get here soon, pretty keen). I've been disappointed with her singles lately; Crazy Party Night and Sai&Kou really dropped the ball, but the 5ive Years Monster track off her KPP BEST album shows a bit of a return to her signature sound and style, so I hope we see more of that in the future.

Japan has an old, old, old music tradition. They use a different tuning on koto than on guitar, and I think that has a lot to do with it. Kind of like how guzheng is tuned a certain way and Chinese traditional music uses that to good effect.

There's certain thingy which I heard lots of pop music gets its cords and melodies from, Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D. I wonder if it's really the same stuff from that.

I'd like to hear more. I know that well temperament is the standard in western music, but I've heard its been adopted world wide. What is the type of tuning your referring to called?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

There is no fucking theory behind pop music in general there is the same damn chord progression in the same damn Major key with different rhythms and different tempos but with the same 4/4 time signature and the same chorus verse chorus verse bridge chorus structure.

It's formulaic, no creativity, quit pretending your weeb music is creative or ""good""

.t took a music theory class a year ago
