Start with Visions. That album is fucking great and it contains some of her best songs. Then listen to Darkbloom EP, Art Angels, Geidi Primes and Halfaxa (in this order). The latter 2 albums are more difficult to get into them, so don't give up easily if you don't like them.
Majical Cloudz (devon) probably on the same artistic level as grimes, yet it is 20-30 times less popular in variety of metrics.

She is what is known in professional singing circles as a coloratura soprano - the highest pitched voice type there is - and (along with it's low bass counterpart the basso profundo) the rarest type found in the general population. Pop music - by necessity - is almost exclusively written for and sung by people with middling vocal ranges, and apart from the occasional show pieces like the Queen of the Night* aria from Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Z-LtheSy7w) repertoire for these kinds of voices is virtually non-existent.
Going by standard logic and industry pressures, the only path to a professional singer/performer career for someone like Claire is to study opera and spend the rest of ones' life singing oddball solo music written hundreds of years ago or in choirs. Which is why the fact that she is slowly succeeding in making a place for her particular sound as Grimes in mainstream popular music culture is such a great testament to her inventiveness and skill as an all-around musician.
In all honesty (speaking as a professional performing musician and singer myself) there are all sorts of stylistic and technical reasons for why what she is doing as Grimes (writing/producing/singing/performing pop or 'pop-esque' music) should A) be physically impossible for someone of her skill set and B) never be commercially successful. And yet she's doing it.
It truly is remarkable - and highly professionally encouraging to those of us in the singing profession, I might add.
