I feel like he could headed another successful band had he not spent his time being the sideman to other people's projects after The Smiths
I always thought it was weird how he joined Modest Mouse for a little while.
Johnny wouldn't have been in another successful band after The Smiths because Johnny doesn't have a good sense of musical direction.

Correct.
He can make some decent riffs and chord progressions, but the songwriting process with morrissey would go like this:
1. Marr gives morrissey a sketch demo with a single one or two chord progressions or maybe a riff
2. Morrissey writes a song based on it, showing Marr where to repeat or whatever. Where the chorus is, verse, etc
3. Marr goes back and records all the guitar parts. And adds some other effects in
Moz is the actual songwriter (and like 75% of the talent imo), that's why he actually had some great solo songs and Vauxhall, viva hate were amazing
