Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you have been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, feign interest in Jangle's Thrift Tourney, listen to Mingus, just let the good times role.

Oliver Nelson - Straight Ahead (1st impressions)
In my opinion 1961 is the year Dolphy became one of the greatest musicians on the planet. His approach to jazz is so unique that there is really no substitute; and the fact that he mastered 3 separate instruments is nothing short of astonishing.
That said, Dolphy is clearly the all-star on this album, and the title should be "Straight Ahead - Eric Dolphy and Oliver Nelson tear it up with a pretty good backing band". Actually, Roy Hanes' drums also deserve a nod.
Still immensely enjoyable, and highly recommended to fans of Dolphy or Nelson.
Nelson is the smooth ocean waves to Dolphy's volcanic magma on this record.
If you've heard The Blues and the Abstract Truth, and you want a comfier, more reed-central and traditional equivalent, this is your jam.

It is, there's some grear picks. But you don't really need to be knowledgeable abouit it, it's just to have a good time and discover nice music. Besides, it's a great way to excercise your critical listening and discover what you like or don't like, without any kind of prejuices.

Oh boy, time for Reviews™

>Unwound - Repetition
>Post-hardcore, noise rock

This is great. Unwound is taking their more artsy approach that their previous albums had, but they've managed to fit it in comfortably with their sound. I though s/t and Future Of What poorly incorporated the more avant-garde elements, but they've taken them in stride. This might also have some of the best bass playing I've heard from Unwound, given that the clearer mixing makes it more prominent.

>Gorguts - Obscura
>Technical death metal, Avant-garde metal (both as a primary and secondary genre!), Termicore

This is a weird album. It's abundantly clear that everyone involved is very talented, and it's all very well produced and tight. Yet, I really can't say I was a fan. I think it's that the Death Metal sound in general just doesn't agree with me. I've been told this grows on you with relistens, so I'll give it another shot eventually.

What next?

>Bad Brains - s/t
Though the Reggae tracks and Hardcore tracks are far from each other, and together they really don't flow at all, but apart as separate pieces they're fantastic. Both feel rebelious and passionate, though I honestly prefer the punk tracks.
8

>Keiji Haino - 慈
I do enjoy the more noise-y crunch-y sound here, but it's far from very enjoyable. Very repetitious and unsatisfying, save for the noisier middle section which was alright.
5

>Cecil Taylor - Unit Structures
UH OH. I'm not exactly a fan of this style of "free piano", which I think just sounds like a shitty MIDI file. There are a few enjoyable moments on the first and second track, otherwise there's much better Free Jazz out there for my money.

John Fahey - America (1st impressions)
Holy shit, Fahey just clicked. I enjoyed this more than FFV actually, as it feels more raw and the 'ideas' seem to flow into each other more naturally.
It's hard to write about a solo guitar album, so I'll just say give it a listen if you want a vocal-less Bert Jansch doing cocaine around the campfire.
Highly recommended to fans of folk, blues or even jazz and classical.

Basket Case - Baby Boom (1st impressions)
This EP sounds like The Pop Group rooted in No Wave.
Unfortunately it's not nearly as cool or good as that sounds, but it is noisy and interesting, and doesn't overstay it's welcome at 4 songs and 14.5 min.
Recommended with reservations to fans of The Pop Group, early SY and Pere Ubu.

Anthony Williams - Spring (1st impressions)
Well, this was very pleasant and enjoyable. This is the kind of shit you listen to in a gazebo while there's a light downpour and the smell of dew fills the air. Calming and relaxing while maintaining a consistently cathartic feel. I particularly enjoyed the first track, Extras.
All the instruments are consistently on point and the musicians feed each other thoughts fluently and efficiently.
It's crazy to think how good Williams was at such a young age (20 here) and how well his compositions hold up.
Highly recommended, and not one to skip over for fans of 60's Blue Note.

Do life time next. Other than that and his work with Hill among others, there's not much stuff like that in his discography as far as I know, as he quickly starts playing fusion soon.

>Flanch - Flanch

I forget who recommended this, but thank you. Already one of my favourite releases of the year. Dark and disturbing glitched out wonky beats combined with rapping, R&B-style crooning and the musings of what sounds like an infant alien. The rapped verses are excellent, with grueling visuals laid out with beautiful internal rhyme schemes. The melodies present here are catchy and stick with you, reminding you of this hauntingly beautiful album every time you hum them to yourself. Arca-influenced for sure, but the poppyness gives it a lot more punch I think. I've also changed some of my ratings after some relistens and I still need recs for Wonky and Glitch Pop so hmu.

Hey I'm making some progress with this tourney and I had this cool idea.
I though it'd be cool to not really drone someone's taste, but drone someone's choice in music. So I thought if someone liked the idea, we could do a dual chart where we'd both choose 10-15 albums and then we'd rate all 20-30 albums. Mainly because I find it so weird that so many people give so much low scores and I thought it'd be cool to rate someone music discoverability or sth
>Haitian Dances
Great guitar playing. Perfectly short.

>quatuor pour le fin temps
I already know this piece but hadn't heard this recording before. It's nice enough, but I'm mainly bothered by the huge changes in volume. Maybe I'm comparing this too much to the recordings I love and know, but whatever.

>barrage
This was very meh. The piano playing is the best thing, but it completely drowns in all the other instruments, which are hugely inferior.

>Half Japanese Volume 1
I cant be bothered reviewing these properly individually as my thoughts on these 3 albums are pretty similar and my reviews are utter shite. Anyway, I don't know what to say other than I love everything about Half Japanese's messy style, Jad Fair's vocals and the sax in these albums. 4/5 for all of them i guess I'm lazy.

>Boubacar Traore - Mariama
I liked this but felt it got a bit samey. Definitely going to listen to more by him though as parts of this album are quite beautiful. 3.5+/5

>Curtis Mayfield - Curtis Live!
Thanks for mentioning this in the last thread Tecnoma, finally made me give Mayfield a proper listen and I'm glad I did. It's one of those albums that just makes me feel good listening to it and it had me hooked in with it's 'vibe' from track 1. 4+/5

I hope you enjoyed my poorly formed opinions.

I'm not really into psych, but maggot brain was pretty cool. the political and apocalyptic themes were made apparent through the music more than the lyrics, which i am always a fan of. i wasn't really into the looser parts. the title track everyone creams themselves over really doesn't do much for me. and the sound effects on the last track were grating.

Morphine - Good: (Alternative Rock)
It's alternative rock with a saxophone in the place of the guitar, which is a bit interesting. The singing reminds me a bit of Nick Cave. It’s a bit monotonous, and it would be a good album for a road trip, that’s the way I listened to it in the past. It’s a good album for a cloudy weather, maybe with a bit of rain, morning or night. Maybe it’s just today that I don’t find this as pleasant as I used to, but I just don’t find anything for me in this album, the songs are not bad, they can be really pleasant and even catchy, but today I’m not enjoying that album as I used to. Maybe it’s because the weather and my mood, it’s really sunny today, and as I stated before, it’s a good album for a rainy, or even just cloudy morning, or a night. Listening it then would probably give +0.5 to the rating. Used to really like this album, I think around 3 years ago. Though it's still a good album, just not a great one for me anymore. 3.0/5

My first thing kind of resembling a review.

Count Basie - Basie (1958, Big Band, Swing)
I don’t have a lot of knowledge about older jazz, started reading History of Jazz some time ago, and I guess that I have to give a try learing a bit about musical theory, especially because I play some instruments and want to understand it better.
The first track sound familiar, it reminds me of Tom and Jerry or other cartoon like that. I thought about at first Looney Tunes, but I guess that there was more classical music.
The brass section sounds great, the melodies are really good. It’s a happy album. 3.5/5

Yo yams since you won my tourney I'll copy and paste what I said to Dogwander with my song tourney.

Okay so here's how it'll work:

Give me 3 or more genres (preferably genres not too complex or genres easily memeable with). I'll pick one of them for the album and if I feel like it I'll fuse some of the genres together.

Then, give me 3 or more subjects to choose from for lyric writing (unless you don't want any lyrics at all). Like with genres I may fuse stuff if I am in the mood.

Then you can place restrictions or suggest shit that you'd like there.

There's a riot going on was at the beginning hard to get for me, but after a while it clicked. Pretty good funk with a psychedelic sound.

genres: hip hop, noise, cool jazz
topics for lyrics: david tibet, the meme scene in 2008, your personal life

I'm listening to it right now. I listened to one of their later albums and they're really good, this album is good, I like the lo-fi sound of it, and I like the singing.

Interesting choices. Will try to have this EP/album finished by the end of the month. Maybe by the end of August if things come up.

I've gained some new appreciation for Music for 18 Musicians lately. I'd given it a couple of listens a long time ago, but only once you start paying close attention and picking apart all the details of the way it's structured and its flow you realise how meticulously composed it is. I should into minimalism sometime when and if I feel like doing daily listens again.
Oh and Important Things/Specter Magic is best Snowing track.
