Lets not pretend modern prog has to cater to metal (which isn't a bad thing, it just limits the sound in some ways) because it lost much of the potency it had once metal became huge.
But fine:
The music has no structure, which is important for prog because it usually relies on repetition rather than one catchy melody. TMV has neither a easily recognizable structure, nor any catchy riffs or leads. Many of their songs are a patchwork of ??????
The vocals are awful, thats a personal preference, but they still remind me of shitty emo
the lyrics are awful and make less sense than Yes's and are far more pretentious
Guitar features are just tap-and-squeel wank, if i wanted to hear that Id listen to glam and hair metal, which i also think sucks

they simply don't go back to previous themes in their longer songs, it has nothing to do with my comprehension, its just a fact
They don't use themes throughout their albums either. Robert Fripp used the same rhythm and finger pattern on his guitar all throughout Larks Tongues in Aspic and does similar things with rhythm in Discipline, and his brilliance shows, you recognize the themes, at least I do. >>65388909

I agree with you that their production is awful, but other than that the only thing you've really said with any substance to it is that The Widow's solo is boring because it's arpeggiated. And even then that implies that arpeggiation is universally boring.

You don't even know that I like The Mars Volta, I was just asking you to defend the opinion you voluntarily stated.

I like arpegiating, but he literallly starts the solo with an up and down arpegiation, or maybe its pentatonic, but you get what I'm saying. The solo is boring because its mostly 16th notes and has very little range. Theres no interesting rhythm to speak of. Most of TMV's other solos are very short pentatonic (or sometimes a 6 note modal scale) runs (i mean at least add some token chromaticism) that as I said before, have not variation in rhythm, followed by playing high-notes and pinch harmonics and tons of random bending. The guitarwork might be blistering but the writer has not ear for pitch or rhythm.
The lack of structure WAS explained. They would benefit from more repetition because their ideas aren't interesting on their own, other prog acts knew that. Strictly speaking Tigran Hamyasan's ideas are even less interesting but he does a great job of driving them into your mind.
The lyrics are bad, i think you acknowledged it
All of that might be OKAY if they were jarring in some sense, they lack any sort of variation in sound, which is partially because their metal oriented (and thus instrumentall limited), and partially because everyone one of their songs is just balls to the wall, they don't have slow sections, they don't even have slow songs.

>they lack any sort of variation in sound
>their metal oriented
>the writer has not ear for rhythm
Are we listening to the same band? The only song you've mentioned is The Widow, which is slow and has nothing to do with metal. They are also a very rhythm-oriented band.

If anything one of their defining flaws would be too much stylistic variation with little to hold it together, but even then that would only apply from Bedlam onwards and some of Frances the Mute.

De-Loused captures their energy into short and catchy pop songs, generally following a standard verse-chorus-verse structure that occasionally gets extended. This generally appears throughout their discography. They actually follow very standard structures and just give the impression of loose structure by adding an extended section here and there.

None of the things you say about their solos are actually inherently bad, besides the random bending (an opinion). It's like you understand what they are but can't explain why they're bad.

>everyone one of their songs is just balls to the wall
You literally just complained about the "random" extended ambience in Frances the Mute.

Forgot to touch on this. I hadn't mentioned the lyrics at all, but they are generally drug-addled cryptic nonsense. Does that make them bad? Maybe, but they're not trying to be anything but bullshit that facilitates Cedric contorting his voice as he pleases. There are a few exceptions.

Generally speaking, I completely understand why someone would hate The Mars Volta with a passion, but you're going to have a hard time explaining why they're objectively 'trash.'
