Final “”””””Reviews”””””

Best to Worst:

>Time Machines – s/t
Read something about how the binaural tones in this album are supposed to hack the mind and put the body in a dream-like REM state and alter the brain to hallucinate. But I can tell you right now that’s all BULLSHIT. Hypnotic, yes, but an audible manifestation of drug use this is not. This is just a damn good drone album that’s well textured, and while the 2nd and 3rd tracks aren’t as mind-blowing as the bookending tracks, they’re still amazing.

>Various Artists – No New York
Some of the best this genre has to offer, and I finally get why this was the breakthrough for No Wave. Contortions and DNA show some of their strongest chops, while Mars (a band I’d never heard of) showed some pretty strong surprises, while Teenage Jesus brought mostly stinkers. Wish I had an English release, since my Russian copy

>Harry Revel, Les Baxter & Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman – Music Out of the Moon
You’d think since this album, being like 18 minutes long could hold interest for more than a minute in every track, but you’d think wrong. While I loved the heck out of a few parts, especially since this was pretty much the first “space age pop” album, but it felt very stale somehow.

>Yma Sumac – Voice of the Xtabay
I liked a lot of the voices here, but upon next listens I found myself much less engaged in it and ultimately felt like it was just uninteresting and dull. Bummed I didn’t enjoy this more.

>The Stooges – s/t
I have no clue how people think this competes with their next two albums. People mistakenly think this was edgy for rock music in 1969, so I can see the recent hindsight approval of this. Apparently people think the fact that it falls flat on its face is the appeal, but it doesn’t even become an appealing mess, it’s just a very mediocre one.

>Royal Trux – Twin Infinitives
After all these years it’s still shit. Fuckin’ hell, these guys are one of my top-listened to artists on last.fm just because of all the times I’ve tried to revisit this and failed. I should like this, it’s psychedelic, noisy, tape music, no wave, etc. but I just don’t, dammit. I’m officially ready to give up on Twin Infinitives (for now at least) and I’m very okay with that.

AND THAT’S ALL FOLKS

Favorites of this month were

>Forget Tomorrow
>Time Machines
>Prayer For Chibi

And least favorites were
>Twin Infinitives
>Morning Phase
>Disintegration Loops
>Songs in A&E
>Tigers Jaw

New Chart is pic related. Much more excited for a few reasons:

>Stuff I'm actually looking forward to
>It's shorter
>It's like 36 albums shorter
>Also doing other charts with it

Should be a fun June! Post your charts if you got 'em!

Windy & Carl - Antarctica (The Bliss Out, Vol. 2)

This was good. Basically just nice ambient. Nothing that I was too amazed with but it was pleasant. 3.5/5.

Various Artists - The Hugo Masters: An Anthology of Chinese Classical Music, Vol. 1 - Bowed Strings

Yay Chinese trad. As expected, this was very good. A nice compilation showcasing those sweet Chinese strings and melodies. I am gonna be listening to the other compilations in the series and may or may not """review""" them. I doubt my thoughts will be very different from the ones I have here though. 4/5.

tourney round 2 complete! nyar vs. post-feelist!

>sondre lerche - heartbeat radio
may have been my mood the past week or so, but this record gave me the fuckin feels. just super solid poppy love songs with a nice voice and (personally) affecting lyrics. this is what the indie side of tumblr-core wishes it could be. lovely, warm, and pretty. i hope someday i can feel happy to this record rather than melancholic and nostalgic.

>the terminals - little things
is it bad i can't remember much about listening to this record? it was still a pleasant experience with some good guitars and some nice songs, but there isn't much else i can say since most of it just didn't stick out to me. a lot of it seemed to blend together. i didn't not like it, but it wasn't too memorable. i'll probably give it a couple more spins and see if it sticks more.

congrats nyar for making it through the first round! send in your next rec soon, please! /daily/ now has another lerche fan. thanks to post-feelist for participating!

>>65323129
raibu is pretty fun, i'm actually watching season 2 right now.

desu my opinion on k-on is that it's mostly bullshit (fun bullshit nonetheless) but it kicks hard when that bullshit nears its end. feels like moving on from an actual friendship, you begin to appreciate the bullshit time you spent together a lot more once the end is in sight.

alrighty got some synopses for you all

Ricci Rucker - Fugg
This was great, really liked the drumming, it's refreshing to hear poly-rhythms in hiphop, especially when they're so well executed, I can vibe to this

Robert Johnston - King of Delta Blues
I mean, yeah it was good, but there really wasn't much variety here... The tape hiss, although a part of the time in which this was recorded, also made it really hard to hear what was going on at times.

Sybyll Bailer - Colour Green
She has a very nice voice, and the production was incredibly warm, but I would have liked a little more variety here

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
There's a whole lot of variety here, more than I would have ever expected... the hype was pretty good as well, although sometimes the timbre of their voices got really wearing

Marge Litch - Fantasien 1998
Jpop meets Power Metal, works at first, then it really doesn't
although this isn't really w a n k, it's still really overstated...

is topsters working?

Torts: Svitlana Nianio - Kytytsi

This was okay. I thought it brought in some interesting ideas and was nicely varied but none of the songs on this were really that great to me. Maybe I have to give it a relisten? I don't know. Might just not be for me. However, Torts advances.

Movenglut: October Falls - Sarastus

This was also okay. I thought the guitar playing and rain sounds were neat but the tracks felt a bit too sad in a cheesy way for me and just didn't really appeal to me that much. Because the album Torts chose was more interesting to me, Movenglut does not advance.

>rock

A dadrock album that all about fuckin and climaxing. Overall the album is kind of a dull. The novelty wears thin rather quick and while the music quality is surprisingly decent, with its touches of psychedelic, rock and blues, it doesn't hold up. You've heard it all before and heard it better, except this time its unintentionally homo-erotic.

ffs chrome just crashed while i was typing out my shitty reviews so they'll be even shittier now because I cba writing them out fully again. Afternoon btw.

>Simon Finn - Pass The Distance
Pretty great, wanted to listen to this ages ago after someone played Jerusalem on plug but never got round to it. Jerusalem is definitely the high point with it's raw vocals but most of the album was good too. 4/5

>Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance
Never liked Pere Ubu when I first listened to them a year or two ago but I actually liked this this time round. Still don't love it even though I probably should, it's pretty much just 60s garage/punk through a slightly experimental prism but it just doesn't quite work. I don't know if I want it to be weirder but either way it's enjoyable. 3.5/5

>CCCP - Affinità-divergenze fra il compagno Togliatti e noi: Del conseguimento della maggiore età
I expected this album to be a lot 'edgier' musically. I'm sure I'm missing quite a bit lyrically but it's just pretty standard punk/post punk with at least one riff sounding like it could have been on a Buzzcocks album. It's done well enough though so I'll give it a 3.5/5.

Just finished my first listen and yeah Early Summer is great, definitely my favourite track. Yet again the drumming is my favourite part of a jazz record. Didn't like the first song much but the rest of the album was good, which is saying a lot since I'm not really a jazz guy at all.
>>
>>65326715
Yeah Early Summer is a fantastic track. Though the drumming on there is excellent I'd say the piano is equally great there. Nice to see you liked it even if you're not too big on jazz.

Listen to some Art Blakey then. I listened to Free for All a while ago and holy shit it was excellent. It didn't scrobble though and I'd like to give it a relisten to improve my """review""" which is gonna be completely fine with me.

I know. You'd think some fucker would go and give the album a 0.5 just to anger some people but it has not happened. Though it's probably just that the amount of people who've given it really low ratings is too small so it doesn't appear visible on the rating distribution thing.

I recommend watching the Ken Burns documentary for some good early info on the developments of jazz. But it's still a great resource and I recommend it; I think it's 10 1hour episodes.

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Free for All

Gonna try to make calendar reviews longer ones now.

They've done it again. ART BLAKEY AND FRIENDS HAVE DONE IT AGAIN. This stuff was absolutely fan-fucking-tastic. Intense, energetic, strong and well played among various other qualities.

The first track "Free for All" is an excellent opener and probably my favorite track on the album. It's an absolute burst of energy from everyone and has some of the best and fiercest drumming I've ever heard in normal jazz. The rest of the musicians were damn fierce as well on this track of course but I find it amazing that Blakey was able to keep on playing like that for so long without getting tired. Then again I have never tried playing the other instruments there before so I wouldn't really know how tiring it is.

The second track "Hammer Head" is probably my least favorite track on the album, but that doesn't mean it's not great. The track just feels a bit more boring than the other ones but the rest of the track is wonderful.

The third track "The Core" is a return to Blakey's fierce drumming. I really wonder how a man can not pass out of exhaustion after this stuff. It's just ENERGY ENERGY ENERGY all the way with this man and it's very engaging. It is my 2nd favorite track on the album.

The last track "Pensativa" is a bit of an odd one on this album. It reminds me a bit of bossa nova and isn't nearly as vigorous as the previous tracks. This doesn't stop it from being a very enjoyable track. Even if it is a bit different, it still feels fitting with the album and is a good way to close it after all of the vehement playing in the previous tracks. As you can probably extrapolate it is my 3rd favorite track on the album and is pretty pleasant.

Overall, this album is an A+ record filled with long tracks of marvelous exuberance along with less desirable but still great slower tracks.

To sum things up:
Wow these guys play good. Btw, nice drums. Thanks FFA hypers. 5/5.

First listen of June off to a good start:

>Arthur Russell - World of Echo

It's difficult to believe just a cello, minimal electronic tones, reverb, and primal percussion comprise such a rich atmosphere of aural impressionism. Immersive from the first track, it's like listening to a painting where each bow of the cello and strain of the voice work as the tremendous strokes on his obscured canvas. I had to do some research and make sure it wasn't an electric guitar I was hearing on some of these tracks.

The song Tree House somehow finds itself verging into the realm of techno, with the glitched primitive percussion and violent plucks seeming to propel the song forward. The breathed whispers add to the frenzy of the track. I tried to find lyrics to these songs but most sources proved unreliable.

The nature of the echoed atmosphere, although remaining an interesting stylistic choice, can lend itself to the problem having many of the tracks sound similar and blurred together. I feel as if future listens may resolve this matter (and their certainly will be). The last few tracks kind of drag on, but they were tacked on with the reissue.

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS

Favorite songs: Tree House, Wax the Van, Tone Bone Know, Let's Go Swimming

This album is quite good; reminds me of early soft machine in a way, but more heavy psych influence. The drumming is easily the highlight of the album, and the guitar soundscapes are quite nice, albeit a tad meandering and boring at times. A good listen nonetheless.

>Jandek - Skirting The Edge
holy fucking shit he pulled out an amazing album out of his ass
A lonely room on the cover. I feel like it has been a while since we’ve seen this kind of solitude.

Four tracks formula seems to be working for Jandek. This one lasts 50 minutes though.

The Side Of The Road opens up with that old familiar acoustic guitar. The protagonist is on a lonely road once again, casually strolling down, ready to leave everything behind. It feels like he is leaving behind a huge burden of life, but somehow the track ends up being rather uplifting. It is nice to leave behind things that bring you down and the protagonist definitely gave it enough time and consideration.

I Know My Name starts with almost a stumble. The tempo picks up as the rep delivers a very rambling vocal section. It’s 23 minutes of very theatrical delivery from Jandek. This is an absolutely stunning performance. This would perfectly fit somewhere on the talky trilogy but the guitar gives it a different aftertaste. Imagine getting really really drunk and sitting by yourself in the room, talking to an object of your affection really loud without him/her being there. There is no time to think about what you say, you just let go. Then the protagonist goes into the world of self-loathing with a hint of a spiritual revelation. This is how this track feels like and I absolutely fucking loved it. There are these moments when the Corwood representative takes all his power of seducing you into his world with all his honesty and this is exactly when he gets me.

The Playground is just as rushed, but slightly more nonsensical than the previous effort. It even includes personal names (some fellow Albert) few of which I haven’t heard in a while. The track turns into another story of obsession over the protagonist’s muse. There is always a sense of giving up life to the other person in this kind of Jandek tracks. It ends on a very sweet " I love you /Love you /I’m not me /I‘m you /and I want you to be me /so we can be the same”.

The closing Last Sunlight finds Jandek delivering the lines with peak intensity on the record, especially exclaiming how perfect his muse is. He even lets out a “yawooeeee”! The thing about this story though is that at the end the protagonist leaves this world of the other person. He gives out a long and loving goodbye to his loved one. Somehow it still feels wrong because when claiming that he let go of all the bad things she suddenly shows up and it all feels like it did before. Bizarre story from Jandek, but I guess love is a bizarre thing after all.

Wonderful return to form. I Know My Name is fantastic. The other tracks are close.

8+/10

Here in Italy shops have only shit in their dollar bins: popular Italian musicians and stuff like that. Nothing obscure and particular.

>>65328903
See >>65328886
I can change the record to something more obscure if that's a problem tho

>>
>>65329053
Yes but I've already heard all that stuff. I'll see what I can find however.
>>
>>65328886
Wew, that's weird
I don't complain then
>>
Is this thrift store thing a tourney or more like a listenalong?
I haven't really been paying attention.
>>
>>65329033
>I can change the record to something more obscure if that's a problem tho
idk mayn, I'm conflicted, on one hand it's a pretty universally liked jazz album that I think a lot of peope have already heard and enjoy so it sort of defeats the purpose of listening to a bunch of weird thrift shit
one the other, you did follow the rules

Did you seriously never hear the name Albert Ayler beforehand?
>>
>>65329202
We all just blind buy a random album at a thrift store and rate all of them
the winner is the highest aggregate score of the ratings
kind of a tourney, kind of not a tourney, definitely fun
>>
>Chrome keeps crashing every time I open /daily/
Why tho

;p

Am I allowed to listen to this album yet?
>>
>>65329251
Sounds cool, have you considered using a google doc to keep track of all the ratings? It'd prob be easier than using a communal pic.

I'm pretty resistant to learning new technology so I'm just keeping a notepad of it ;p
If you want to set one up I can add all the info, I just literally don't know how
>>
>>65329299
Do you have your gold /daily/ membership card yet?
>>
>>65329354
Yeah, I can do that. I used to set them up with my friends when we did this type of thing.
It automatically calculates averages, does other fancy stuff, and looks nice too.
>>
>>65329363
Where do I apply?
>>
>>65329213
Nope, never. But I'm pretty blind when it comes to Jazz. I have a lot of CD's in my garage that my father left me, some of them are not even opened yet so if you want I can search something in there.

I really don't have any problem in buying/finding something else

contact me at:

>>
>>65329442
Request an application form from Smurmelade at https://rateyourmusic.com/~Magus_The_Sexy, wait five to ten work days for it to be processed, then another two to three weeks for your card to arrive. You may request a digital pass so you can access premium /daily/ content before your card arrives for a small fee. This will also prioritize your application so it may be processed a little faster.

cant i just bribe someone through sexual favors?
>>
>>65329444
Okay cool! I just think it'd take a bit of the fun out to have an acclaimed album in with 200's dance mixes and albums with 2 ratings on rym.
Not your fault in the slightest, though. If you wanna dig through the garage and grab an album that looks cool you're good to go!
>>
>>65329591
You can. Send a dick pic to misha to have your application processed instantly. You'll still have to pay extra for the digital pass though.
>>
Also guys I kind of found a jackpot bonus with my CD (hope it's not a flop (ha)). Not pictured is two expansion packs and zoo tycoon plus two expansion packs for that

Stoke: turned it off after like ten minutes, a little too skreenky for background
Seclusion: very nice so far
