>Jandek - The Myth of Blue Icicles

Jandek laughing over Houston!

We’re back to tuning #1 too!

Back to the acoustic guitar with this 4 track CD. It’s pretty short (37 min) so that is always neat.

Too Course sounds very close to I Threw You Away style in terms of the strumming arrangement, but this isn’t his Godin Multiac. This is just a regular acoustic guitar. The lyrics…well the protagonist seems to be this guy who acted awkwardly in front of someone he likes but then the narration loses the sense of time. He starts talking about her having him in her mind long before he had her in mind and closes off the track with what seems like him looking for her out of the window…I am lost. Maybe the last section (closed doors, looking out of the window) is just a metaphor and my interpretation is crap as usual. “I either know too much or not enough to answer that question”.

Where do I even start with Blue Icicles? The protagonist has a birthday. He “bends the world” to his birthday. Then he proceeds to show how in control of life he is while resurrecting his loved one. All this complimented by some very satisfying bends at the end of certain strums. Very disorienting track with his new era desperate delivery.

The Daze is 14 and a half minutes long. Protagonist is lost in the daze. The entire concept is him taking a ride of life and witnessing it in the form of running colors surrounding him. He barely notices how fast it all passes. At some point it almost seems like that he becomes the world he passes by. “I was that path / I was that sleep / I was that image”. All just because he got lost in the daze. I guess the track is about losing yourself in life and about how fast it flies. He is totally fine with it too. Cooing from Jandek to a slow guitar movement.

repost because I don't want hahahahahahah to miss it

Big Mess - Big Happy (2016)
>Pop punk, punk, hardcore punk
I'm really not big on punk, but I actually really liked this. Maybe it helps that I'm in a kinda angry mood.
The first track is a great opener, but I started to get really excited when the riff on the second track started playing.
The length is perfect, as the length is often a problem for me on punk-like stuff.
I can see where some of the same-y comments come from, but I think that just depends on whether you like the general sound, I thought it was very cohesive. The riffs and the drums offered enough variety, so I guess the comments come from the vocals, but I think they add a nice cohesive layer to the whole.
The main thing that doesn't sit too well with me are the lyrics, but that's more of a personal thing, so difficult to comment (they definitely aren't bad, just don't really resonate with me).

This gets a +.

Also spend the money I paid on something band-related! (or on getting taste...)

From best to worst

>Kazumoto Endo - While You Were Out
Fun abrasiveness. Most noise pieces I've heard are over-indulgent garbage, but I can genuinely say this is one of the most fun noise albums I've ever heard. Great shit.

>Nina Simone - Pastel Blues
Really passionate vocal jazz with a lot of blues background. Can't think of any of these covers where I like the original more. Even tracks like "Be My Husband" which are super minimal are just as emotional.

>Ground-Zero - Null & Void
Liked this a lot, especially the last half, but to me it's their most formulaic and predictable. Seems to me the only "full" tracks on here are the "movie" and "international" tracks.

>Amon Tobin - Supermodified
The first three tracks are amazing, but what's with that instant drop in quality? There's literally a "beatboxing" track that just sounds like farting turntablism.

>Midori - Shinsekai
Less fun, abrasive, or interesting than their other stuff, but I loved some tracks from here. after their second album there isn't much by them that surprises me I guess.

>Aoki Takamasa + Tujiko Noriko - 28
The weak glitch elements from this just make the interesting indie-esque songwriting 90% less interesting or satisfying than it could've been without it.

>Type O Negative - World Coming Down
Slightly better than October Rust, but I still can't believe this is what people love from TON after I loved SD&H.

>Type O Negative - October Rust
THIS is the TON everyone loves?? What the frick? This is like half as good as Slow Deep and Hard. Repetitive, chose humor and style over melody or my interest.

>Von Lmo - Cosmic Interception
Gay no wave

>Spiritualized - Songs in A&E
Sweet Heart Sweet Light with shit singing, no catchy melodies, and zero genuine charm.

Next post should finish this series off but who knows.

There’s No Door closes off the album with Smith being slightly more energetic than his “I’m gonna die in a minute” state. Well he talks about everything disappearing as soon as you enter the door. The door acts like a lottery here. I feel like it refers to choices in life. The presented scenario is a bad case of luck, where everything disappears and you fall down forever. The track.album is closed off by a more expressive guitar section.

I thought this one was pretty good. It doesn’t go too far away in terms of sound, but the stories are wonderful! I guess the fact that the acoustic guitar in one of the earliest Jandek tunings is also nice to hear. I liked it.

Dude thanks so much! Really appreciate the kind words (and euros certainly)
i guess the lyrics are a bit angsty, which i'm sure isn't for everyone.
All the money we get from the album are going in a band stash, so they probably end up being used to finance a tour or recording session or something

>The Residents - The Commercial Album
My least Residents album so far I suppose, although the problem isn't that it lacks interesting sounds as much as it is that every song is about one minute long, which means no interesting sound is fleshed out into an actual song. It's kinda like a sound collage but not really. It's cool but it conceptually just kinda fails to excite me as much as more song-baed Residents albums.

It starts off with a spoken word piece that declares the setting, and gives some of the right clues to interpret the sounds that will happen for the rest of the record, almost like a narrative piece. It's a very fun idea and the cinematographic nature of these sounds helps it work.

In general for the classical stuff: don't necessarily fixate on the performer/conductor, I just put down my preferred renditions.
If you already have conductors that you assume you will enjoy more, don't hesitate to go with these instead.

Negativland - Escape From Noise (1987)
>plunderphonics, sound collage

Hey, this isn't just a meme! It's actually pretty damn good! The use of samples is really interesting, it's not the typical music samples I've come to expect from most plunderphonics, it's samples from like old news broadcasts and public access television, and this creates a really weird and disorienting atmosphere. Each track has it's own distinct theme and a distinct sample to go along with it, and some tracks are much better than others in this regard. "Time Zones", the greatest meme of all, has the most inventive sampling here, creating an entirely asinine and repetitive argument about time zones over a spooky dark ambient backing, "Christianity Is Stupid" has a man with a silly accent extolling the virtues of communism as opposed to Christianity over a badass industrial beat, and "Michael Jackson" is /super/ cool, I just love the way all of the artists are listed over the super creepy ambience. And then some tracks just fail miserably. "Over the Hiccups" is cute, I guess, but it's not fun to listen to, "Landscape" is like a fuckin' folk track, and it's terrible, and I just can't get into "Nesbitt's Lime Soda Song". But mostly, I definitely like this album.

Yeah nah I'm never mad at people for not tipping. After all it's not like pizza is some gourmet dish or anything. It's something that can feed a family for like $20 so I get it, but it's just that specific event that pissed me off.

Various Artists - American Primitive Vol. 1: Raw Pre-War Gospel (1926-36) (1997)
>acoustic blues, gospel

Honestly at some points (namely the first track) the poor recording quality actually detracts from these songs by the slighest amount, but it really doesn't matter even a little bit, because this is the greatest damned music ever. 70 minutes of fiery, passionate, extraordinarily well-written, and just plain ol' wonderful in every single way gospel music.

While the instrumental elements here are all fine, the vocal performance is not only repetitive, dtretched and dragger for way too long, but it also goes for some happy and whacky type of toasting that tries to be playful and fun but mostly comes off as very one dimensional. It may work when some bloke with holes in his pants tells you he shot the barber who tried to cut his dreads, but when you go for this same sort of tone and delivery when talking about how much you love your girl, it does not exactly seem tonally consistent.
Plus, what is the point of making your muic happy and fun when happiness is a lie an fun is vain?

Here's a makeshift freeform chart with some long-ass reviews. Do read them though.

>Yellow Swans - Bring the Neon War Home
The first three tracks are an onslaught of painful and highly psychedelic noise improv. I'd be hard pressed to describe the sound as 'organic' but it certainly isn't mechanical. If indeed organic though, then certainly alien. The cover is all too apt, as each track oozes forward like some fucked up sort of amoeba, every new psychedelic noisy idea a new pseudopod into which the track flows.

The last two tracks are much longer and more subdued, the fourth I would even call repetitive, although it builds to a much grayer cacophonous conclusion. The final track is definitely a comedown, letting you somewhat gently down off this horrifying bad trip of an album, but it risks coming off as a lame finish.

Mind-blowing start, but the last two tracks, which are unfortunately longer, aren't nearly as interesting.
>7/10

>Albrecht/d. & Joseph Beuys - Performance at the ICA Lunda 1.Nov.1974
I was immediately drawn to this album and artist by RYM reviews containing comparisons to Marcel Duchamp and “art raga rock” but it was really just listening to some dudes bumbling about in a room with some instruments being passed around and some people indiscriminately chatting in the background. A microphone happened to be present, I guess. I wonder if they knew they were being recorded?

The terrible recording quality steals any opportunity for developing an atmosphere—a tried and true last ditch resort for musicians that can’t do fuck all else—so it doesn’t have diddly shit going for it.

it goes on for like 48 painfully dull minutes, and occasionally the drumming forms some kind of rhythm or the awkward chanting reaches some form of weak peak. Occasionally a recorder (maybe a flute, but the player can’t play for shit) pierces the dim malaise, and almost gives sections of the songs an industrial appeal?

Is that comp with Joe Washington and Austin Coleman? Because if so those tracks are something outta this world

>P-Model - Scuba
I was very disappointed by this, to be honest. I had heard some great things about this, but it's simply devastatingly dated. The drum machine sounds tinny as hell, the guitar or whatever is as plastic-sounding as possible, and the faux-string synthesizers somehow make something inherently terrible even worse. In an equally bizarre choice of production, the bell sounds on some tracks are crystal clear, sharply contrasting every other sound on the album, even the vocals. And while all of this audio fidelity description could easily be describing an early Residents album thus far, the songwriting really is what makes the album particularly unremarkable. A few songs come up with a fun gimmicky hook or melody, but then run it into the ground with a dozen repetitions per minute.

I mean, to tell the truth it’s not as terrible as I’m making it sound, it’s just so damn boring. A few spastic quirky moments save this album from the point of no return. I have higher hopes for P-Model's first album, but P-Model to me just sounds like the ‘tarded Japanese cousin of Devo for now.

>Geoff Leigh - The Chemical Bank
I hesitate to call this a poor man’s Captain Beefheart, mostly because it deserves better, but it could be boiled down to a poor man’s Beefheart. Apparently it belongs to a genre of music called Zolo, which basically means it’s silly, new wave-y, and herky jerky? (Is the entire genre just jacking off to TMR?)

Luckily for me, I enjoy most of those things in concentrated doses, and this EP does deliver. Each song suffers from its own brand of ADHD, skipping between quirky melodies and rhythms at will and dropping in a healthy dose of free sax bellowing in the background of all. Furthering the “poor man’s Beefheart” analogy, poor Geoff Leigh doesn’t quite have the singing talents or vocal range of the Captain, so he makes a solid effort with vocal manipulation (synthesizers?) but it turns out fun enough.

The title track is probably the most lyrically and sonically genius moment on the album, if certainly not the catchiest. In it, Leigh paints a picture of the Chemical Bank (a now outdated reference since Chemical Bank acquired Chase Bank and adopted the Chase brand some time in the 90s) or really just any old behemoth money machine on Wall Street. The interior of Leigh’s chemical bank is Satanic and factory-like, with horn fare mimicking tortured cries and chugging machinery. The lyrics are on paper much more mundane, but coupled with voice effects and general song atmosphere, recited like poetry, take on a menacing air.

“Black Metal Twist” is a gruesome heavy metal parody of a twist number. “Psychotropic GangLions” is almost noise rock, however weirdly peppered by a quiet but manic drum and other erratic odd sound effects. “Starshooters” is kind of like a David Bowie song in more than song title at times, but ends up being the catchiest song on the album, and is unique enough where the comparisons aren’t too obvious.

The whole deal risks coming off as a bit too silly, especially being so brief, but I really enjoyed what was there. I also enjoyed how much I was able to write about it.

>Joseph Beuys - Sonne statt Reagan / Kräfte sammeln
Beuys actually makes pop rock songs here, which I’ve gathered is very against his character, and it sort of shows. The first song is dangerously catchy, if a bit demented. It appears to be an anti-Reagan song, but it’s entirely in German and brief bits of crude English, so I can’t be too sure.

Under no circumstances should you listen to this song if you want to be alone with your thoughts for the next week, because you’ll be hearing this shit instead, mark my words.

The second song is the most insultingly dumb piano rock I have ever heard, and under no circumstances should you listen to that song period.

>Sven-Åke Johansson - Konzert für 12 Traktoren

Nice tractors.

Basically 17 minutes of different tractors making sound. Johansson even arranged for some of them to shut down around the mid section and just let the silence ring out.

It was relaxing, reminded me of the countryside. Wouldn't say it was a fantastic field recording. but it was pleasant.

Gonna drop these "" off and finish the last few tomorrow

Best to worst:
>Suishou no Fune - Prayer for Chibi
Probably the most emotional album I've heard on this chart thusfar. I could go on saying "I wish x song were half as long" since the album clocks in at over two hours, but I fell like they'd have about half of the emotion if that were the case. Fantastic if you like your psych/drone/noise/ as ambient as this.

>Stereolab - Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements
Half as predictible as Mars Qudiac Quintet. I felt a lot more of the eclectic influences here and the songs in general. Couldn't believe I was engaged through the entirety of "Jenny Ondioline." One of their bests imo.

>Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate
Songs of Leonard Cohen with half the replayability. Wish it were better but don't mind it at all.

>Women - Public Strain
While there were a couple okay songs in the first half, it's really the last three that shine out to me as modern post-punk masterpieces. Lonely and cold, but not exactly interesting.

>Sarah Vaughan - s/t
Alright, I just wasn't huge on her expressions/vibrato. Vocal parts were the least interesting, which isn't a great sign for vocal jazz.

>The Stranglers - Stranglers IV
The most cock rock I've ever heard from post-punk. First and last song were good but that's really all.
