You sound like the most boring person
I'm going to start a new segment on /mu/ called 'philosonic' where we discuss/ponder philosophical question thats pertain to music. Keep in mind this will not be a "is music objective or subjective?" kind of thing although that may come up in discussions which is fine so long as it doesnt unnecessarily derail the thread.
Today's question: To what extent does originality matter to you? If there is an album that is, in your opinion, a fantastic album but it suffers from the fact that it lacks any sort of originality in the slightest (tame impala,...

i love you so much for trying to make /mu/ a better place.
i'm about to sleep so i'll be brief. orginality should always be encouraged and praised, but it is not enough to make an album great. on the other hand, perfection of an existing style also warrants praise. people should not be afraid to do something that exists if they can bring out the best of it.
however, looking at these following four scenarios we see that it is better to be original:
album is original and is great: 10/10 worthy.
album is original and is bad: i appreciate you trying...

thank you for responding anon. im about to go to sleep too. i'll be making these threads at different times during the subsequent days.
hopefully when i wake up it will be a thread filled with great discussion. also feel free to suggest future topics

Cringey
>does originality matter at all?
Yes, as does the context of creation and hearing. Music (as any other art) is medium of self examination in the multiple relations between artist, consumer and society (especially the society of art consumers). In this context artistic merit comes from:
a) reflecting the life/mind of the consumer in a necessary (I feel this HAD to be like this) but unexpected (I couldn't make this) way.

I'm making an anti-normiecore chart.
>Criteria: Must be sincerely weird and actively trying to flabberghast the average music listener. Cannot be autist shit like Merzbow, who makes music for his own reasons.
So far I've got Ween, Captain Beefheart, Zappa, Daniel Johnston, Wild Man Fischer, and GG Allin. Any suggestions?
The Residents, Caroliner, Sun City Girls
Tom Waits?
>Daniel Johnston
>Actively trying to flabbergast
Daniel thinks (and is correct) that he's making completely normal pop music, with the intention of making pop music.
The "weirdness" is the schizophrenia and lo-fi recording.
Mathcore, noise rock, post-hardcore, emo, etc. are also welcome

Who else hyped for the new Battles album?
I still haven't found a math-rock album that goes down as smooth as this.Is there one?

Polvo - Todays Active Lifestyles
I've been looking for new stuff, haven't been too successful. But mathcore wise, The Boy Will Drown.
Mathrock, Colour is really good.
why is it that so many records from dance and electronic labels such as R&S, Hotflush, Hyperdub, Warp etc. have LPs with no cover artwork, just a simple plain sleeve with the labels logo on it?
I'm into all sorts of genres but I only know of electronic, dub, techno, etc labels that do this sort of thing.
probably has to do with the short life cycle of this type of music
the label carries more weight than just a single release so why bother with actual artwork unless its an album?
>>55625756
That would definitely make sense - it seems like R&S in particular has a huge catalog comprised mostly of singles and EPs
keeping it simple looks good
Been really into Andrew Jackson Jihad lately and just getting into the folk punk genre. Any suggestions?
The most obvious one: Violent Femmes
These artists are a lot different but are in the same folk punk boat
frank turner
ramshackle glory
ghost mice
pretty much cancer: the genre.
i guess Violent Femmes - s/t and the pogues - run, sodomy and the lash are good tho
so... which are you /mu/?
This progression is surprisingly accurate
Only underage faggots care about labels

you are thinking too much into it, even if you are doing it as a form of epic baiting, you wasted your fucking time making that stupid chart.
Why are "experimental" albums so emotionless?
You mean like Autechre and shit
>>55624326
claim refuted by the example you chose. nice.
Because most experimental albums fall under the category of post-modern, and one of the results of post-modernism is an increasingly ironic and nihilistic narrative. This narrative prevents experimental albums from expressing emotion because the artist who made the albums see it as vain.
Contrast that with the rise of new sincerity artist who base their sound on their sincerity. Alas, because new sincerity is a reaction to pomo, it also, more often than not, loses its experimentation and instead focuses on conveying a genuine sense of the human condition.
I'm pretty late to the clipping party. What did mu/ think of this album again?
>>55623616
this album is the definition of wasted potential
good nothing amazing though
a lot of people liked it but i felt some of the tracks went too far with the pop side of things (i have no love for the club song thing). i thought midcity was better.
wtf omos? I need my Jap music Gen
