I play Bass as a hobby, started out playing upright in school, now I just tinker around on a bass guitar.
But I don't feel inspired or like I'm getting any better. I want to be able to write bass lines for other parts and record stuff, but don't play any other instrument well. What should I do?
Here's a shitty thing I recorded on my phone.

you might familiarize yourself with the concept of a "band"
it's when several people who can't play every instrument gather and play together
>>61984881
Yeah, but I don't have many friends and don't know anyone to form a band with.

>I want to be able to write bass lines for other parts and record stuff, but don't play any other instrument well
hate to be that guy, but you don't even play bass well. that bassline's weak, super basic indiecore stuff, and i'm pretty sure it's mostly ripped off some Arctic Monkeys song or other.
just practice bass, listen to lots of different music for inspiration, and learn guitar. Guitar will almost certainly help your bass playing.

Thanks, will look into that.
I found a cheap 5 string Fender jazz bass in my area, i've never played bass before but i kinda want to try out playing bass, should i get it or i'd better look at a 4 strings one?
>>61985205
So I just got my first 5 a few weeks back, playing 4s for quite a few years. I say go for the 5. Honestly, the learning curve isn't that different and it'll give you more versatility in the future. You just need to memorize note on one more string.
Tl;dr start on a five and you'll be just a fluent as you would be on a four.
Mike Oldfield made this when he was 19. What's your excuse?
I'm not 19
What excuse?

How do I get into Gentle Giant? I like most of the classic prog bands but Gentle Giant just doesn't seem to click. I feels like their songs don't flow like Yes or Genesis for example but then again neither do many classic King Crimson songs that I like. There are some things that sound good but I just can't get myself to listen to their albums again and again (though the only albums I've heard from them are Octopus and The Power and the Glory).
Listen to Octopus until it makes sense.
Acquiring the Taste. Fuck Octopus for the time being. Just try that.

I've tried. Multiple times.

I'm not Turny. I know who you're talking about, though. He's probably the only other people on the board, bar myself who talks about these genres.

Fuck you, I liked it.
I want to produce instrumentals similar to death grips. I have ableton, serum, and a bunch of samples for drum kits, am I on the right track?
>>61984086
Now all you need is drugs
Listen to them alot and just think about the production, and then listen to another sound that you like and do the same thing, incorporate both and make some cool stuff
>>61984086
you can make any music out of anything dude.
analog synths would help though, if you're going for that industrial sound
