I'm a huge AnCo fan, loved all their other albums but Painting With is almost unlistenable to me.
It sounds like three very sad people trying to make the most jovial album ever, and it sounds so forced and non-fun. I was a bit scared that this would happen when I saw studio photos of them looking miserable or with fake smiles on them, and that’s exactly what the album sounds like.
So they cut down on experimentation and sound variety for what? It seems like they didn’t replace it with anything and we’re left with an album which is lyrically decent but nothing special, and musically boring and bland in every single way. The synths sound cheap as hell, the sound effects are there for no reason but to fill in the gaps of uncreative ideas presented in the rest of the sounds, the drums are literally some of the worst I’ve heard on any album in a long time. Which sucks cause I’ve always been a huge fan of AnCo drums, from STGSTV up to CHz in my opinion it was always top notch. But shit like Lying In The Grass or Hocus Pocus? Drums sound demo-ish as fuck. Can’t believe they decided to put those poverty kicks and claps on all the songs.
The melodies are alright I guess although they made way more catchier and better written stuff in the past, but there’s not punch to them since they’re backed up with so much mediocrity. This is why I like Sleep Cycle more than Painting With, Deak made an emotional piece by stripping the sound down, while Avey and Panda decided to make a bunch of repetitive fast-paced tracks with doubled or tripled vocals which make the tracks sound very uncomfortable, jumbled and unfocused, and take away from any emotional or relatable factor one could feel towards the album. It’s just a clusterfuck of basicness.
I feel very strongly towards it since not only is it the first AnCo album I straight up dislike, but I just see it as an awful step back in every single aspect. What did you think of it, /mu/?

>Man why does this sound so cheap and awful?
it is literally the best produced AnCo album. Every other one of their albums sounds like earfucking trebelly shit. My first thought when I heard it was literally wow the finally made an album that doesn't sound like shit.
>>63933960
Interesting point of view. Why do you think it sounds the best out of all AnCo albums? It sounds cheap compared to others imo. Are you looking from the mixing/mastering standpoint?
>>63934033
I dont thonk the synths sound cheap by any means what so ever. From a sound design perspective theure.pretty complex. They weee usong a 4500 dollar synrh machine on this albim called the Buchla easel which is partiallynwhere thenname.comes from. And.those noises arent just filler, they complete melodical ideas any time theyre presented. Theyre supposed to sound disconnected and disjointed. The entire theme of this album was cubism and dadaism. Thats what people are not getting.
What would've been the better release, Pinkerton or SFTBH
Pinkerton.
SFTB is completely all over the place, and moves far too quickly for the concept album its trying to be.
Pinkerton most definitely, but Longtime Sunshine is an 11/10 closer which is far better than Butterfly, and You Won't Get With Me Tonight is better than most songs on Pinkerton
I feel like they would have refined SFTBH if they actually were to make it. What we have now is just a combination of demos and other tracks that were intended to be on it.
Either way, I still think Pinkerton is the better due to how honest Rivers was trying to be. Of course that led to having a breakdown over the bad reviews, but it's still a great album despite what it caused.
Post an album/artist/song/etc. you're curious to hear /mu/'s opinions/thoughts on. Other people post their opinions/thoughts.

Excellent baroque pop/psych folk crossover. One of the best and most life affirming albums of the first psychedelic era. Haven't listened to it in a very long time though, I think I burned myself out on it.
Interested in hearing thoughts on pic related. I think it's dull as shit. I can't get into the Band.

I was a bit underwhelmed to be honest. Too much sunshine and rainbows for my taste. Superb production and arrangements though.

what does /mu/ think of Jim Morrison/The Doors?
Great, but I like the atmosphere of their songs better than any one specific aspect of them, if that somehow makes sense.

How do I into NYHC, /mu/? What are some essential bands and LPs/EPs I should check out? Any live or compilation albums worth listening to? Any insights you have on the scene's relation to the DC or west coast scenes?
Are you looking for fast youth crew bands or heavy and slow bands
>>63933368
Fast as hell. Also, I read a New Yorker piece about the scene and plan on picking up the book it mentioned: http://www.amazon.com/NYHC-York-Hardcore-1980-1990/dp/1935950126
agnostic front - united blood ep/victim in pain
warzone - lower east side crew ep/don't forget the struggle, don't forget the streets lp
cro-mags- the age of quarrel lp (the demos are worth a listen, i actually almost prefer them)
Now that the dust has settled, what did you think of this album?
i used to pretend to it
>Now that the dust has settled
Fuck off with that
Not as good as Gangnam Park

Can we talk about how amazing Sleep Cycle is? Deakin needs to take the reigns on the next Animal Collective project because ever since he left before MPP they've been shit.
>"ever since he left before MPP they've been shit."
...
>he was literally on Chz
if he takes the reigns they'll be the next Tool
>>63933172
I know this but he attributed one song and some guitar work to it. He hasn't been as heavily involved in AnCo as he was before MPP.
>>63933193
Is this a good or bad thing? Because Tool is pretty garbage.
He gets a lot of shit.
Does he deserve it or is he one of the greats?
hes cool
Of course he deserves it all of his music is just an obnoxious dude on coke trying to be meaningful
he's everything that's wrong with music
Yo,
Im looking for some new school rap from your countries. Only non-english stuff.
Hope u can hook me up with some bangers.
