I'm literally rewatching it now.
I really loved this iteration of the Christmas Carol, loved the atmosphere, visuals and the musics. Also Starlight's voice is top unf this time around, not to mention one of the cutest scenes of the whole series

Christmas episode in May/10

Outside of that it was a great episode in my opinion, with the except of the fairly generic intro song and reprise all the music was top tier (Pinkie's Present might just win me over as my favourite song in the series), and I know a lot of people bitch about it being a severely simplified retelling of A Christmas Carol I thought it wasn't a particularly bad retelling, they managed to work the central themes of MLP into the classic story and made a fairly entertaining episode out of it.

That being said if we look at it solely as how well it adapts A Christmas Carol instead of judging it by its own merits it is fairly weak.

I know your feel. I actually made a video were I gave it a 4/10. I have now disliked and privated that video. This episode was amazing and the only reason I hated it the first time is because I stayed up till 2 AM editing.

Liked it. Songs were good and so were the use of characters which were on point. Decent humor. Certain deserves a good rating more so than the previous episode.

It was pretty boring. It was a rehash of a Christmas Carol and we learned nothing new about the world or characters.

This season will be over long before december unless you didn't mind another mid-season hiatus

Though they should have aired it towards the end of the season so it was a lot closer to fall/winter, not what is the quintessential summer month

While I wanted to punch the no fun allowed emo Snape wannabe right in his eyes.
I wanted to personally gouge my eyes out and throw them at them at Dash,Rarity,Fluttershy for being such a bunch of arrogant circlejerking monkey retards. Their ignorance made me vomit and reminded me of your typical bunch of retarded /a/ and /b/ bronies why can't everyone enjoy their disgusting My Little Pony cartoon.

>>
>>27373573
The animation and music were great, very great.
The story was a generic A Christmas Carol ripoff, which fucked up the original HWE concept by making it completely human-like.
It's a Starlight Glimmer episode, a character that according to Big Jim was 100% their idea and then the idea of shoving it down everyone's throats was also 100% their idea because they believed it was a smart move.

5/10: the technical aspect was great but the execution and character focus was concentrated shit.

I liked luna and starlights songs, they mixed it up a bit by adding bit of grinch into it but overall I was still underwhelmed. I hate A Christmas Carol mostly because of how many shows do it, it was interesting to see them do it without death, tiny tim and all the other stuff but not interesting enough. also since its may I was not feeling the spirit. part of me would like to say I would have liked starlight to say in like an introvert but that just would be foolish of me. its a nice kids episode for Christmas , noting more nothing less.

I legit expected someone to point out that there is nothing wrong in bettering the community but having a holiday to relax is good too or at least for someone to argue that they better community by uplifting lonely ponies (since they cant be poor) Snape was not wrong, he was just unhappy.

The point of it was that there's no point in making the world a better place if no one can enjoy it ever. And if no one ever can enjoy the fruits of your labor, are you really making it a better place?

well that was not very well conveyed. starlight seemed more upset about hollow cheer, she did not seem like a no fun all play type person, just the type that hates to stock up on bread because shops close for holidays

She was upset ponies were wasting their time with the holiday. She didn't realize that the holiday is absolutely essential to keep Windigoes at bay.

Maybe if the holiday emphasized its very practical reason for existing rather than showcasing the distractions used so people WANT to have it, she would actually have appreciated it from the start. But hey, doesn't look like Equestria outside of the book is offering up shit to keep the Windigoes out.

I need a higher volume. This episode is a goldmine for remixing, amvs and tons of other stuff. it instantly got me thinking about ink potts count monte cristo and Im sure I will be seeing those 2 dancing ponies set to "once upon a time" from anastasia
>>
The songs and animations were solidly 10/10. The problem was the weak moral. "I don't wanna celebrate Pone Christmas!" says Glim Glam with all the nuance of a G3.5 character. "But you will LITERALLY DIE if you work instead of celebrating, see!" says the choir of cringey flanderized mane six expies. I didn't take issue with the ACC plot though.

Songs alone make it one of the best episodes this season though. I was positively starving for memorable songs for 4 seasons now.
>>
>>27373573
>cheap Christmas Carol knock-off

Go watch Muppets or Mickeys Christmas Carol instead, you brony faggot.
Storywise the episode has zero value in term of character development or interaction. It was a truly pointless filler. Pretty much a Star Wars holiday special compared to the trilogy.

Musician anon here.

I think i'm very subjective cause my opinion has alot to do with the music.

as a jazz musician, i was amazed at the music. the luna song was my least favorite, but all the other songs were amazing and had awesome arrangement.

for me, it's one of my favorite episodes in the entire show. was also pretty funny.
>>
>>27373573
Songs were okay-mediocre, despite making up 90% of the episode, the plot itself was subpar just a christmas carol with ponies (extra points for bringing the wendigos back), and why they decided to air it in may is beyond me, they've really started beating a dead horse with starlight's "ebil background!" Overall I'd give it a 4.5/10 watchable in absence of better episodes.

At first I was really disappointed that MLP would rip off "A Christmas Carol" like every other cartoon and countless movies before. But when I actually watched the episode, I was pleased to discover it was a more original story that just borrowed elements from Christmas Carol.
Although part way through I started wondering if Twilight hadn't made up the story herself, given that the characters were based off of ponies that she knew.
Luna playing the Spirit of Christmas Future (aka the spectre of death) was really fucking cool. And favorite new character in the episode was the guy from Hatred. Although everyone else says he's Snape.

I liked it, but I have to take point off for it being another fucking rehash of A Christmas Carol. Seriously, won't they ever stop doing that plot? The songs were fucking amazing, especially Say Goodbye to the Holiday. The parallels between Snowfall Frost's story and Starlight's own past were rather obvious, but it didn't bother me too much. This could have been a perfect episode if it had been just a tad more creative and innovative with the whole "A Christmas Carol" plot.

While the Christmas Carol trope is used quite often in long running TV series and cartoons, I'm one who doesn't partake in many cartoons or TV shows, so seeing the story re-told trough FiM wasn't a negative consideration I had previous to my viewing.

FiM Takes many common themes and progressions from Christmas Carol and subverts them enough to be engaging, while also tying those themes back to the canon of the show through Starlight Glimmer. I thought this tactic was interesting and was used well to draw very obvious parallels to Glimmer, which helps to engage the audience in the story, as it's telling has a practical effect on a character.

Songs were good, from a narrative and musical sense, visually the episode choose a particular tone, being a rustic pallet which conveyed the cozy, warm, atmospheric feelings of the holidays and group comradery very effectively. This was very cohesive with the themes being presented to the viewer, the primary one being we should celebrate the time we have with your loved ones and friends.

I particularly enjoyed some of the more nuanced moments, The lampshading of Snows (and by extension Starlights) motivations, Pinkie Pies song, the Meta gag Spike displays to convey a commercial break, when Twilight invites Starlight to join the party at the end with no expectations of her decision,

The episode was pretty tops m8.
>>

>subverts them
it does not subvert anything, it makes it more kid friendly.
>I thought this tactic was interesting and was used well to draw very obvious parallels to Glimmer
I felt like it was too recent of an event.
>>
>>27378678
Why would you say that, are you asserting that making something more kid friendly can not be subversive? Does implying the death of thousands vs the death of a few imply something that's more kid friendly? It sounds to me like a bit of a semantics game, I think my position is pretty reasonable.

>I felt like it was too recent of an event.
How do you think this arc would have been more effective with more time? Is the time you're referring to show canon time? Or is it real life time? By my calculations it's been 6 months since the season 5 finale, that seems like quite a bit of time to me, assuming that's what you're referring to.

well trixy and Starlight ep was not that long ago, they bring up her past in every/almost every episode.you need the wound to scab over if you want jabs to be effective, right now it feels played out.Its like im stuck in a loop of "no offense" part of rainbow rocks and no one says no offense.
