Sunburst may not have been the wizard he wanted to be starting out, but he does seem to be quite the scholar. Well-versed in many variations on the same concept, and supplemental spells applicable to a situation as well; he's quite the theorist, which must have been an endless source of frustration, being unable to practically experiment with all the tools at his disposal. As he said, his new official position will likely curtail further practice, but the spark of curiosity may yet lead him to try anyhow.
Perhaps he'll have a spell to his name someday, alongside luminaries such as Rockhoof, Hayhoof, Somnambula, Flash Prance, Meadowbrook, Trotter, Mist Mane, Bridle Buck, even Clover the Clever or Star Swirl the Bearded himself!

I was checking out the reviews for the premier, and one reviewer said that the power shifted away from the women to the men in this episode; Shining Armor puts more stress and effort into the baby thing than Cadance, Spike pushes Starlight on, and Sunburst resolves the conflict in the end by telling Twilight what to do instead of working with her to find a solution.
Do you guys thing that gender dynamic was deliberate, or coincidental?

I see a correlation between Sunburst and Rincewind from the Discworld book series (Terry Pratchett)
I mean look at Sunburst, he's quite similar to the Wizzard of the Unseen University. In the book he's described as a cowardly and failed magician, young with a brown/orange beard.
Sunburst is clearly a reference to Rincewind, though he's capable to overcome the limits Rincewind has and become actually the saviour of the Crystal Empire, though Rincewind remained a failed ....(maybe almost since he "defeated" Ipslore the Red's sorcery inside Coin's staff)
