I think it actually adds a nice layer of character without having to spend time explaining it.
Dash sees herself in Daring Do, that's why she loved the books so much.
We also see that Moondancer looked up to Twilight and was doing similarly without having the show explicitly tell us.
That was pretty much the entire point of that flashback sequence. If she didn't share the design with her, the entire scene would come off as a bit of a filler.
