Winter break continues for the fillies and colts of Equestria. Eventually they'll be called back to their classrooms for more schooling, perhaps sooner rather than later, but the teachers are still enjoying their time off, too. Still, it might be a good idea to start thinking about those return homework projects. Vacation essays, diorama crafts - the usual sorts of simple participation and attentiveness assignments. Critical thinking generally waits for the class to have readjusted to work. Which all means it's extra-important that a filly has some great days to write about!
Apple Bloom was away for Hearth's Warming; was Sweetie Belle with her family, too? Likely. Rainbow Dash might have been free, though, if she didn't go back to Cloudsdale for a visit. What kind of holiday was it for Scootaloo?

So I've been thinking lately.
I think it's reasonable to say Friendship is Magic would be less popular if you took out any single member of the mane 6.
Imagine the series having Twilight actually return to Canterlot for her studies after S1 opener and the series dealing solely with the other 5, even if as well developed as they are today.
I think it's reasonable to assume a chunk of the Twifags (chosen since it was the biggest group bar none back in the day, obvously) would have probably not stuck with us.
The same could be said for all ponies, even if the impact may have been varying in greatness (sorry, AJ... people like you but I doubt any one of us actually watches the show directly because of you).
With that said, the question that arose in my mind is as follows,
"Could have adding another character into the main cast back in the day possibly made the show more popular back when it first started and ultimately nowadays?
Or would that simply spread around the fans of the current M6 between 7 characters instead of 6 with maybe a completely negligible increase of fans?"

Yes, but I think you would get less and less pay off as you added more characters. Since a good going off point would be "what about eight or nine". Assuming the character complimented the other six as well as they do.
And I don't think it'd be amazingly more. Maybe 10% more.

This is assuming she had an idea for a seventh.
Although if the show began to spread out after season 6 or completely changed focus, it would be interesting if the characters an episode could focus on grew more, beyond the mane 6, Spike and the CMC. Like a town.
I guess an overall plot could have it be cutiemark related. Maybe cute pre-cutiemark fillies are used to introduce older ponies with jobs and hobbies and the audience explores the town through their eyes.

I can't speak for everyone but I got into the show because of the its setting, charm and writing appealed to me. Really getting attached to the characters themselves didn't really come until a few episodes later. Unless a seventh character really changed the show's dynamic or status quo I can't imagine that they really would've made much of a difference to the show's popularity.

However, the impact of the princessification of Twilight actually negatively impacted the number of people both here, on /mlp/ or even EQD and it is empirically provable.
So even individual characters must have some sort of bearing on the overall fan population, even if it is not applicable to all people watching the show.

Yes but princessification is one of those big status quo breakers. Not saying that you're wrong, but people may have stopped watching because they felt it ruined the cast dynamics, the setting or the show's direction instead of Twilight's character. So we have to take those things into account; how many people tuned out because they thought Twilicorn ruined Twilight herself.

Sure, kids are told they're so creative for having so many ideas, but what Rarity did to fix Steven's moustache was coming up with a creative solution. That's a much more general superset of creativity than children are used to thinking about. That's solving shit with creative solutions.
