That's correct. All you really have to do is change proportions and a few bones that may go in different directions. The big parts like the scapula, ribcage, and pelvic girdle are universal. Even humans share these major bone masses so if you learn any given mammal it'll make it easier to learn humans.

The standard mechanical pencil is 2b quality so they're on the softer side. You just have to have a really light touch when using a mechanical pencil. If you're leaving a gloss on the paper where your mark is then you're pressing way too hard.

Yeah I think it helps to either put where your ground plane is on the canvas or at least try to visualize it. I always start my legs from the ground plane and work up into the major forms of the body and make adjustments as needed. I should really make a webm of me demonstrating.
