Oh yeah. I'd encourage any and everyone to sketch with pen. It definitely has a different feel and look to it and will teach you to plan out your lines better.

So I practiced with traditional for a while before obtaining a drawing tablet, after which I drew digitally for about a month. I decided to practice with traditional again and noticed it felt more comfortable for me. Been practicing with that for roughly another month.

Now I don't know how to quite ease my way back into digital. It almost feels like starting over again. What should I do?

Peronally, I think you should use whatever method you prefer. For example, you could sketch and ink traditionally, then scan it in and color digitally.

I prefer digitally all the way, but working in traditional media require more concious and strategic thinking (especially when you don't have any means of undoing what you put on the paper), and in the future I will try and make sure to draw at least one drawing traditionally every day.
>>
>>25880521
>Peronally, I think you should use whatever method you prefer
That's the thing. I prefer digital, it's just that traditional feels more comfortable. If I'm making any sense. Drawing traditionally has helped me a lot with my basics, it seems, but there's almost nothing to show for it when I try returning to digital.

I don't know. Maybe I just like how neat everything looks when I draw on paper compared to drawing on a tablet while looking at a screen. But the difference is so huge that it has me stumped. I also don't have a scanner.

If you started traditional then doing so will always be more comfortable. The work you put into getting better with digital is going to transfer to traditional nicely since you're using those same kinetic movements.

I personally can't speak for anyone who started digital. It took me a good 4 months or so before my hand-eye-coordination began improving in digital. My works were god-awful when I first got my tablet. This was about 8 months ago and I'm still way better and faster with pen/paper. This is mostly why I work with pen/paper when coming up with ideas since I can sketch faster.

Think of it as a "total mileage." No matter what medium you're using, you're still adding to that total time spent drawing.

>Now I don't know how to quite ease my way back into digital. It almost feels like starting over again. What should I do?

Just jump back in and start drawing.

To give a small example: that circle exercise I boast about every now and then, I have a really hard time performing it digitally because I still struggle with making the lines I want in digital. My circles and ellipses don't come out the way I want them to the majority of the time so I have to use the transform tool a lot.

>>25880710

>I prefer digital

Why is that? I'm mostly digital because of the convenience an infinite canvas brings along with the many shortcuts that art programs have.

>there's almost nothing to show for it when I try returning to digital.

The basics and some of your hand-eye coordination is going to transfer to digital even if you don't realize it. Practicing digital is going to improve your traditional works as well since you're still adding to that "total mileage."

Pic related is the very first couple of sketches I did when I first got an Intuos Small back in March of this year.

I think results can vary immensly depending on medium. If you're used to the sensation of graphite on paper, you will find that a plastic tip on a plastic tablet feels quite alien. Though even if you're not used to one of the medium, any experience gained from either will in the end improve your results on both.

When it comes to tabletop tablet it is going to take a lot of getting used to regarding eye and hand coordination (that part was only really difficult the first time for me, though). But that's all there is to it: using it until you're used to the medium.

You're always going to have to consider and balance out different appeals to each medium; comfortability, looks, convenience, costs, what you can learn from them, etc.

IMPORTANT FOR TABLET USERS:
Most "good" tabletop tablets with proper drivers will try and stretch it's input area to fit your monitor dimensions. This is kinda bad, as it could mess with your muscle memory if your tablet drawing area has very different dimensions than your monitor.
My only experience is with Wacom tablets, and in their tablet settings they have a checkbox that says "Force proportions". Make sure this is checked (it's unchecked by default). Otherwise your hand is going to learn to draw ovals when you want to draw circles on the monitor.

>they have a checkbox that says "Force proportions"

I had forgot about that shit. It's especially annoying if you happen to have two monitors. Wacom drivers are pretty stellar from my limited experience.

I believe windows 8 and up has this dumb shit called "flicks" that can also affect the quality of your strokes.

I think the newer intuos come with a matte finish but don't quote me on that. I actually put stick-on shelving plastic on my intuos small since the surface was beginning to develop small scratches that were really annoying. It now has more of a "pencil and paper" feel to it than the original surface had.

You need an undersketch not only as a guide but for a plethora of reasons. It will help you with proportions and keeping everything lined up correctly. Right now you're in a stage where you can't see your own mistakes so having an undersketch is especially important.

Learn to bisect basic spheres and tilt them facing different directions.

I'd redline your stuff but I'm heading off to work right now.

Drawing a box makes foreshortening anatomical features a fuckton easier.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreshortening

To the untrained eye, it will look off but they won't tell you why or how. But, if you don't use this properly, your pony will look like a Picasso painting to anyone who has a 10 in their perspective stat.

If you were even the slightest dedicated, you'd read up on wikis and drawing blogs instead of having someone spoonfeed you.

Are you >>25881630? The box in the middle is kind of skewed.

You can treat the faces of a pony's face and body like you treat the faces of a box.

Pic related. Sorry for the crudity of it. I'm dead tired. This is a 2-point perspective. I actually started with a sphere and boxed it up since I can already visualize these planes. I should work with boxes more since it's easier to size up proportions some times.

I think it looks pretty solid. The few things I could point out are more or less stylistic choices rather than errors.

There are more groupings of feathers you might wanna consider, as it will help when drawing semi-folded wings. You have probably already done it, but comparing wing bone structure to the human arm is also an idea.
Simply googling "wing anatomy should do it.

The proportional length of the bones in the front legs is different from e.g. the show style. Something to consider, but my no means does yours look wrong/bad.

Also, I know these are sketches so I won't hold you guilty for imperfect lines, but I think you should work on your line confidence so that you don't have to draw over the same line multiple times.

Looks good. Also try to think of the "bean" as a wrapping form. The scapula and pelvic girdle "wrap" around the bean body and changes depending on perspective. This is how you can easily determine where the furthest limb is protruding from. This is where learning to draw ellipses in different perspectives can come into play.

You include what you think you need to include to help you out. What works for me won't necessarily work for you.

I only mentioned it because I like for people to be aware of the many solutions to a problem. Sometimes I can solve an issue with ellipses and some times I need to "box-up" the character to figure something out. They're just different tools being applied for the same results at the end of the day. Get good at using one tool but learn about the others so you won't get stuck.

Oh I see. The thing is that android tablets dont have pressure sensitivity. I know some PC laptops are coming out with tablets that have pressure sensitivity. The tech is becoming more common. I predict products like the cintiq are going to become cheaper in the next 5 years cuz they'll actually have companies like MS competing with them. They'd have to have some clever marketing to keep their screened tablets at that $1000 price range.
>>
>>25893919
They've already "tainted" their Intuos line by splitting it into Intuos and Intuos Pro. The latter are what most people would think of when they see an Intuos tablet.

Speaking of which, I'm Beananon and having a hell of a time getting used to drawing on a tablet again. Oh well, I got to the bean stage and that's hard. I'm just out of practice with back leg anatomy because I did portraits for so long. Gotta look at my refs.

Wacom already have patented the technology that has the butt end of the pen act as an eraser so you wont find that feature anywhere else. Who knows what else they're trying to patent in order for them to keep the monopoly on quality displayed tablets.

You're having trouble getting used to the disconnect between hang and screen? I've been at it with an intuos small for 8 months and i still struggle with that disconnect some times. I heard using a screened tablet has its own set of quirks to deal with.
