Which also describes Starlight Glimmer. Recall that Starswirl the Bearded made a spell involving cutie marks. Well perhaps she adjusted that spell to make it apply to any kind of pony and have it not swap but just plain out remove. After all she figured out something about Starswirl's spell with time traveling, just like Twilight in Magical Mystery Cure with the cutie mark spell. Besides isn't being adept in magic being able to adjust spells into your bidding. And also both when they were villains have used magic of some kind that was originally created by something or someone else like the crystal mirror, element of magic, cutie mark spell, and the time travelling spell.

And as for overpowering the mane six, Twilight does shitty in magical combat and let's her self be vulnerable to waste time charging a beam when just Starlight used her spell which probably causes stasis to the target. That's just Glimmer being smart not a mary sue. And the Our Town ponies were surrounding the Mane Six anyways, and they're not changlings, they're innocent ponies, so they probably were hesitant to fight back against them anyways.
