Because Bookhorse, people are free to speak anonymously, and one of the advantages of that is to express yourself however you please.
Something you realize in spending time here is that it is not half as vitriolic as you think, people are usually facetious and the "vitriol" is more of a way of weeding out outsiders. Channers will laugh it off but people that don't belong will react more extremely, take the mean speak at face value and get angry. It's really 4chan's way of weeding out undesirables. People that don't stay long enough won't get the humor and leave to somewhere they feel is "safer," meanwhile others will stay and understand that half the vitriol is just 4chan's weird humor.
