I love EQG but a legitimate problem that I have with it is that as movies, they are not able to focus on each individual member of the mane 6. They only have room to focus the plot on one or 2 characters, usually Sunny and now Scitwi also.
Think about it like this. Why invest in a movie series that takes a set of characters and puts them into a more normal, boring universe with somewhat jarring character designs where you have to watch them repeat the same mistakes you've already seen from the show it crimps a lot from?

What comes off as lazy artistic design in an attempt to emulate the success of monster high, yet another high school setting, characters being regressed in represented age in order to fulfill said high school setting, mirroring an entire kingdom into something as contrived as a high school, sudden idiotic romance interest that is shoe horned in, retarded villain plans, I could go on.
Some of the music was good, animation thankfully improved after the first gleaming shit attempt, and writing got a little better but not by a significant enough degree to really endear me to the movies.
I think it is grossly overhyped and is only successful because of the MLP tag otherwise it would have been entirely overlooked and forgotten. It does get autistic levels of hate from some people but also receives autistic levels of fanboyism for something mediocre. The only people I ever hear anything more than "it was alright" from are waifu fags.
It soured my thoughts when an "MLP movie" ended up being a trite, contrived, cliche, high school drama show that doesn't even take place in the dynamic and fantastical Equestria but instead funny colored Ayy-Earth. I genuinely gave them a try despite my trepidations and disappointment and the film's did nothing to actually assuage my concerns, only reinforced them.

The show has episodes with issues, I can admit that easily. I'm also just as critical with those episodes. However EqG in its entirety is this way across three films.
Secondly, I'm not sure how it is hypocritical to say I do not like the high school drama angle at all for a series based in a high fantasy land full of magic and monsters nor do I like how they are portrayed in EqG compared to the Equestrian versions.

Sorry but the explosion of popularity in the adult demographic had a lot to do with the drama about it on 4chan. It wasn't the only factor but it was a big contributor to its spread as a form of shitposting/trolling. Many people beyond /co/ and /b/ would never have looked twice had it not caused such catastrophic rage amongst people. It followed a weird trend of initially being liked by a group, found to be excellent shitposting material by a much larger group, then actually attracted even more viewers who otherwise would have never even been aware. This coupled with the tendency of people to spread shitposting around the rest of the internet had a bigger impact than if it had been left to the first group. Others found out about it and enjoyed it, saw it as a trendy counter-culture, or saw it as an avenue to harass people.
For good or ill, 4chan is responsible for the expansiveness of the demographic.

Its really their designs for me. I like the clothingfor the most part, and the hair is fine, but i just remember hearing about a mlp movie that takes place in a humanized world, and when I looked it up in anticipation, i saw these. I just hate that they are the same colour as their pony counterparts. Also, the first movie was absolute garbage and made these characters as bland as wood. The other movies are good though.
