Newbie Dash is fine on its own, but when you realize that the past few episodes in the Wonderbolts-Dash arc are Rarity Investigates and Testing Testing 1-2-3, it kinda blows in comparison.

There are so many more interesting things they could have done with the episode though. Like for example: Dash joins the Wonderbolts, and they train for the show, but then they suddenly postpone it and drag Dash off to some far flung corner of Equestria. When they get there, there's a monster/changelings/ some other enemy of ponies present, and we learn that fighting threats to Equestria is basically most of what the Wonderbolts do, and that it isn't widely known due to the isolated nature of the locations they get sent to. They continue to go on more missions, and Dash struggles with telling her friends, as she fears they'll be upset that she's getting involved in dangerous situations that they might be helpful in, and her strange behavior and spotty presence in Ponyville strains her relationships with the other 5 to the breaking point. Eventually she breaks down and spills the beans, but her friends explain that it's fine that she's off having adventures without them, because they'll always have the memories of their adventures and the elements of harmony to tie them together. So like Boat Busters + Princess Twilight Sparkle, but with more action, actual exploration of Equestria, and some image repair for the poor Wonderbolts, who come off as incompetent douches in most post S3 episodes.

If you go by the apparently heavily biased results of the episode ranking surveys I did then seasons 1 and 2 are still best, but outside of that I think seasons 4 and 5 have a chance of being better to some.
