Perhaps she looked around at all conflict centered around the classism and xenophobia in Equestria (both very much canon and tv-y) and got the idea that removing differences would end the conflict.
Perhaps she developed some form of OCD comorbid with anti-social personality disorder, which resulted in her gaining an obsession with order and sameness that she projected on other ponies around her.
Perhaps someone whom she despised (e.g. an abusive father) was a social darwinist prick, and she decided to embody this pony's antithesis by emphasizing equality and fairness.

It's well established that Starlight's doctrine was wrong in the realm of MLP universe. There are some problems with cutie marks, but these are never social issue-causing problems. Some of the concerns are addressed in that s05 Apple Bloom/Luna episode. This universe would probably be more interesting if there was more controversy here, but frankly, this is not the case.
So, the interesting question is: what caused Starlight to be so wrong? And since it couldn't be because she felt pity over toiling masses forced into misery by their cutie marks, "some personal experience caused her to think like that" is a valid answer.

I would blame that on more on so the series taking the episodic approach rather than a "All episodes smoothly connect to each other to one story" approach like in Avatar: The Last Airbender." And besides if major villains would actually still remain successful like Discord or Chrysalis that would affect the status quo too much negatively for show writer's flexibility on what they can create for each episode's plot. And also you had episodes where she remained wrong the entire episode like Swarm of the Century, Lesson Zero, It's About Time, and The Crystal Empire.

Sunburst could have still fit this role but they botched the execution. Sunburst moving away because of his talent is fine because they acknowledge it's a small thing. But to really sell the snowballing effect they needed to compound on that experience and show future struggles with cutie marks she had. I still feel that she must have been bullied at one point because a lot of her dialogue seems to imply it.
