- don't be afraid to draw longer nose
- pony eye is slanted, on a line from the ear to the nose
- pony eyes are large, fitting within a circle roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of the sphere
pony faces draw very differently:
- the skull sphere makes a large majority of the head's mass
- the nose is rather large, 1/3 to 1/4 of the height of the sphere, measuring from the base (horizontal blue line) to the tip of the muzzle
- the nose does not form an angle ("stop") with the forehead (see blue lines), there should be a curve--steeper in females, straighter or even straight in males
- in female ponies, the jawline is a continuous round curve from the muzzle to the throatlatch
- in male ponies, the entire nose is a bit longer, the shape blockier, and the jaw more angled and defined (see green/orange doodle)
- ears are located at upper corners of the sphere, imagine a square that fits within the sphere
- horse ears are shaped very different than dogs' or cats', even though the stylised pony ear is a wide triangle like in those animals, take care to think of the correct ear (see brown doodles)
since you're accustomed to drawing human faces, I suggest you work with longer noses first even if you want to develop a shorter-nosed style later

Most might disagree with me, but it seems more like a contrast between art styles than anything else. Your critique helps, as the nose was originally very human looking, but looking at the redraw it seems to be in a more show accurate style and looks almost nothing like the original.

I'm not nitpicking. I'm trying to encourage the artist to study basic fundamentals of drawing and to not shirk on that with the excuse of "muh style". It's about more than anatomy. It's about perspective, depth, realistic proportions, etc. Look at pic related, the forest spirit from Princess Mononoke. It's got the body of a hoofed animal with a humanoid facial structure but it's designed and drawn in a way that makes it believable. If she wants to make a short snouted pony with large eyes she should go nuts but she could stand to learn to improve it with a good foundation.
Not sure why I took the time to do all that because I'm 90% sure she'll never bother but whatever.

Anybody got any tips for designing an aesthetically pleasing OC that doesn't have over-the-top features or a godawful color scheme? Need one for a story I'm writing but I suck at stuff like this.
She's a unicorn slave mare living in a world where ponies have been slaves 5-6 generations, so everything about the way they view society is different from their free ancestors. They've integrated into human society, fully accepting their roles - it's just common sense to them that they obey their human masters.
The character in my story is a unicorn mare that was bought for a young boy that has abusive parents. She's intended to be a sort of guardian for him, to begin to protect him from his parents' abuse at some point in the story.
I wanted her base color to be blue, but that's all I know about her so far. She needs a name too. If anyone has any ideas or tips I'd appreciate it.

for the sake of conversation I'll throw out my opinion what makes a "good" or "bad" OC.
The problem that's seen a lot across many fandoms is when people are trying too hard to stand out in a crowd of all the OCs. The way people unfortunately try to get through this is through bright colors, more horns, wings and all manner of physical appearances.
What makes a "good" OC in my opinion is giving them life. They can be monochrom,or a clone of applejack with some derpy mixed in, they don't have to physically stand out in a crowd with looks, but they need some personality. The way they interact with the world around them or with others is (in my opinion) more important than how they look. Of course you can take it too far in that direction too as is often seen in all fandoms.

Well a lot seem to hate grey coat and blue/light blue mane simply because of overuse. The same could be said of black and red color schemes, but that is one that has been overused to the fifth degree and then some, so it's understandable that they would hate it so much. It's even a major stereotype nowadays, and has been for some time. But there are plenty of color schemes that work and still get bashed upon, just because a color is oversaturated.
