I'm not enjoying it, because characters I like aren't getting attention while characters I don't care very much about are getting tons of it. The writing and characterization has been solid, but this season still hasn't been as enjoyable to watch and hype for as others. There's no balance in how they're doing things.

I might need to give S3 a rewatch. In hindsight I feel it might suffer the same problem as Equestria Girls 1, all suffering because of MMC.
In all honesty, I don't recall S3 being all that bad, except for an opening that was dull, the Spike episodes, and Games Pony Play not being great. Then of couse MMC, a whole other problem. Everything else was okay.
But so far, S6 has been mostly terrible. What with trying to force new characters yet at the same time fearful of using them, barely any veteran writers for the series, an inability to handle toy mandates ("Explore Equestria" doesn't sound that fucking difficult to write) and several other things. In roughly the same amount of episodes, S6 has managed to be much worse, with more to come still.
Season 6 might just be proof this show needs to fucking end already.

Newfag here. I can't really stand watching the first four seasons. I found their animation to be shoddy, their dialogue to be painful, and their pacing to be utter shit.
So, I can only really compare S5 and S6. It's only fair to compare the first half of S5 atm.
S5 had a much better premiere than S6 (Crystalling was great on Starlight/Sunburst part, and the baby was cute, but The Cutie Map did far more with kicking the status quo and was just generally more engaging).
Both had their one filler episode (Appolosa's most wanted and Applejack's day off), however S5 had Tanks for the Memories, which I don't think any of the other episodes in S6 so far have managed to beat.
On the other hand, A Hearth's Warming Tail was probably the most fun-fulled episode out of both first halfs of S5 and 6. Also, S6's gimmick of "Starlight as Twilight's student" is working great for both Twilight and Starlight, whereas S5's gimmick of the cutie map wasn't really used all too well.
Both S5 and S6 had their designated world-building episode. For S5, LTOGriffonstone and Gauntlet of Fire for S6. Gauntlet of Fire was far more memorable than LTOG thanks to Ember and also HOLY SHIT A SPIKE EPISODE THAT DOESN'T SUCK! (oh and S5 had Princess Spike).
Although, S5 had Amending Fences in its first half, which S6 still hasn't beaten yet.
As for the Mid-season finale: Spice up your life plays it far more safe than Do Princesses dream of magic sheep, but DPDOFS ends up falling on its face due to Luna's guilt complex getting obnoxious by now.
Ultimately, when comparing the first half of S5 to the first half of S6, I see that S5 played more risks and stretched out further, and so achieved more stand-out episodes than S6's rather 'mehish' lineup of episodes. However, S5 did make more mistakes and had more flops than S6, and S6 has been more fun.

Apploosa's Most Wanted served as foreshadowing and an example of their shared talent that they ended up getting their marks for. It was anything but filler.
Call it shit if you want, but their most "filler" episode so far has been Ponyville Confidential. All the others at least expanded on one of their personalities and depth, if not teaching them a valuable lesson. It's a shame how many people just wave every one of their episodes away and don't think about that, just because they're not the mane 6.

It's pretty shit but just having Saddle Row & Rec makes it better than 3 automatically. 3 had no good episodes and mostly terrible ones.
Also why did people hate A Hearthwarming Tail? The timing was weird and it wasn't that interesting, but it had some decent songs.

I don't hate S6 but it's mixed.
TGoMP, NSP, AHWT, SRaR are GREAT episodes
