Other than 'its really obvious', all I can come up with that is definitive is the body structure. Teenage dragons/Spike walk on 2 legs and are thin. Adult dragons (including Spike the 2 times he was made larger) walk on 4 legs.

Because act 3 of DQ was a train wreck. Garble and Co up to that point were 'hazing the new guy', not unlike how the Bolts did to Dash recently. They might have been meaner about it but really they didn't hurt Spike, just made fun of him for being pathetic. They still let him stick with them afterwards.
The ending was idiocy. A better ending would have been Twi and co kidnapping Spike during the night thinking they're rescuing him. That's a really good alt ending. I agree completely. Dragon Quest was shaping up to be a pretty good episode, and 2/3rds of it were. It's just the final act that drops the ball.
