I've watched all the episodes in S1-S4 twice, and the episodes in S5 and S6 each once.
From where I stand, you NEED to watch the show to understand some of the underlying jokes around here, as well as the backstory on the cheparicters so you don't look like an idiot. And the show isn't that bad, it's got some fun points and I unironically think the music is pretty good.
That being said, if you don't delve into the art, fanfic toons, and music the fandom has created, you're seriously missing out. Even if it's not canon or even makes sense, I've had a lot of fun reading stuff like Rebirth of the Damned and Anthropology.
The way I see it is it's a show designed to be fun. Unless it's actually illegal, don't let people, especially those on an anonymous Imageboard with no bearing on your actual life tell you how to have fun.
That being said, if you are going to be a turbospurg in real life, you ain't going to have any friends in real life, so take that how you wish.

My first post in this thread, I'm a fan of the fandom, last episode I watched was "Green isn't your color" in 2011.
I never stopped enjoying the source material, I love it, but I can't bring myself to watch it out of fear of losing something. I like having it as sort of an unwatched treasure.

This in spades. I used to like the show. I was happy every time a new episode came on. As the years went by, and Season 3, 4, and 5 happened, I gradually started liking the show less and less. I haven't watched the last... four or five episodes, I think. The ones that came before them were all terrible, and I haven't yet seen anything anywhere that leads me to believe the ones I've missed aren't also terrible.
To some, I'm a fan of the fandom, not the show. But if that was truly the case, would I be as pissed off as I am about where the show has gone? Far as I'm concerned, the ones who lap up every episode unjudgingly are the "fans of the fandom". They don't care about the show, they only care about watching poniponi because poni.

You speak as though the people who enjoy the recent seasons are the same ones who lap up every episode unconditionally. Even amid huge waves of nostalgia, S5 was ranked almost as highly as S1 and S2. S4 was "okay." S6 is doing decently by /mlp/ rankings, with a couple stinkers here and there, and I estimate it'll be somewhere between 4 and 5 by the season's end.
