The Soviet Union died to it's own obsession with internal order, it did what was easy instead of what was right so many times their house of cards simply fell down. By the time it died everyone they really needed was dead or in prison and everyone in control was some kind of a freak or total asshole. We should be amazed it lasted as long as it did. Interestingly none of that has anything to do with communism, they never implemented true communism, they never made it past the oligarchy stage despite all their arm waving over it being a people's government.
