It was a year of full-time volunteer work, with housing and food expenses for my group being covered by the program.
Basically, these places don't have to worry about insurance liability on their side of things, because this program covered it. The participants in the program do full-time work at real job sites and get to build up some professional skills and maybe some contacts.
It was a pretty good thing, overall. Very different from university, but now I have some stories to tell. Plus, 9 months of solid full-time volunteer work at a variety of positions looks pretty good on a resume.

I'm pretty sure I only saw that thread because I was looking for it, and it was specifically about complaining about canadians.
