I can think of a few episodes with complex, thoughtful characterization, and most people here totally missed the point of those episodes. Misunderstood the character's feelings and just called it boring, because fuck putting any effort into thinking about pony.
Those same people were probably the types to praise Gauntlet of Fire as finally doing Spike justice and making him a good character. I can't blame the writers for normally relying on more simple characterization, when less than 10% of the viewers will be able to appreciate it when it's thoughtful.

AJ's ENTIRE shtick is being the straight gal. The logical one. The "I'm here to fix shit" pony. She really doesn't have any real character behind that.
So when they have to challenge her, and its not about honesty, they have no other way than to make her a retard, because aside from appul and family her common sense is all she's useful for.
