That's what 'high profile' means. The units that do the actual work don't get the headlines. Units like the Navy Blue Angles and the Air Force Thunderbirds are high profile public relations units. They're recruiting tools. Just like the way the WB are portrayed in the show there's a long waiting list of elite pilots who want in.
Commanders of a unit like that are usually in their 40's. There is zero reason to assume Spitfire is a youngster unless it's part of your waifu fantasy and you can't take the thought of your fictional horse lover being older and more accomplished than you.

Captain of a team does not directly imply her rank is Captain. Neither does Captain of a ship imply that the ship Captain's rank is Captain...usually they are a Lieutenant, Lt. Commander or Commander depending on the size of the ship.
But assuming a USAF rank structure, Spitfire would have to be a Lt. Colonel at the very least to command a squadron. That implies late 30's at the very least. The current commander of the Thunderbirds is 40. I couldn't find the age of the Blue Angels's commander, but he has gray hair.
