It's a good point, but the friends were there to specifically to support Rainbow Dash. Dash was looking forward to the competition for a good while and has been practicing for it, only for Rarity to enter last minute.
Competition is fine among friends but it was sort of crushing Dash's dreams, especially when Rarity wouldn't be keeping her wings anyway. Basically, it was not at all helpful and actually harmful, when the intention was the opposite. A little talk, reminder or reality check by the others doesn't really seem out of the question.
Everything worked out though so it's cool.

That's missing the point. The point there was why she perhaps shouldn't have competed and the point in the OP is why did no one seem to dissuade her from competing.

The friendship was young and Rarity had demonstrated a powerful personality that likely cowed the others.
Combine this with her insistence that she'd risk the uncertain transformation to be given wings, and it is natural the girls simply assumed 'she knew what she was doing'. It also kept her closer to RD for support than they could stay even up to the last seconds of the competition. They might have assumed she would bow out, but competing wouldn't exactly have been outright 'wrong' either; she could use it to "act afraid" comically and screw up in a way that would boost RD's confidence.
I am not so naive as to assume she did not get carried away on her own self-indulgence and that this was her true or at least dominant motivation by the end. But there is enough there to suggest otherwise, and in follow up episodes (particularly that horrid episode where Spike ran away to 'seek his dragon roots') it was demonstrated the character was capable of intentional duplicity in the name of her friend's benefit. This subtlety is one of the strengths of the show when it is at its best, no character has chemically pure moral motivations and the depths of emotion cannot always be resolved in the moment even if they may be perceived over time.
