A question for drawfags: how do you deal with people who say "draw my OC" and they mean "she's cute, brave and pretty, please design it from the scratch and I'll tell you if it's okay enough".
If you do commissions, do you charge more cash/points/whatever for that kind of requests? Or it is me being lazy and not motivated to change every 5 minutes the design of the pony, creating several pictures instead of one.

I make it clear from the start that the price stated is for the drawing, not the pony design, and that a clear reference image with correctly displayed colours is needed.
Design commissions have a different price (and it depends on how fancy the person wants the ref, how many angles, how finished art etc, lowest level being a literal MS Paint recolour), and they may or may not be available at given moment.

If you actually had to design said pone as well as draw it, I would definitely ask for extra. If they can't even summon up enough energy to give you a pony creator image to work from, make them pay through the nose, especially if they keep sending it back. They're the ones being lazy - you're the one with the talent to provide the product. Make it clear exactly how many revisions they get for their money, only do rough sketches until they give it the OK, and then make it clear that after the OK if they don't like the finished piece they have to pay to revise it again.
It sounds like I'm being harsh, but you have to lay down the law from the get-go on what you're prepared to do. It saves you (and them) a lot of wasted time and temper.

It's far from top of the line, but it works and I figure I would try my hand at doing some drawing on Inkscape.

I live near a college and I'm pretty good at electronics, so every year before summer starts people throw away all manner of good shit like screens, microwaves, fridges, and apparently drawing pads. Some of it is good and they can't take it with them, some is irreparable garbage, and some just takes a little bit of soldering and repair to get back online.
Dumpster diving is mainly a /diy/ pastime of mine, but it's legal here and it's a decent way to find another project.

For an absolute beginner I recommend doing both. More so tracing just to get familiar with forms building a mental library, than slowly inch your way to just drawing it over your own. Try to use other images as references WHEN YOUR STUCK but like the tracing i recommend you lean off of it to gain a stronger mental library, but thats advice for an absolute beginner. I also recommend learning this stuff on paper first as its easier to transfer what you learn from real life than starting up drawing digitally.

First of all I think its more important that the pen sensitivity works on that tablet. Make sure you have the correct drivers installed for it.
Links in the second post of this thread are a good start. I also recommend Fun With a Pencil by Andrew Loomis. Develops a light touch and post your work. The drawfags here have will have a more critical eye than you and can point you in the right direction.

That's not a bad little tablet. Wacom make good stuff. It's a little bit small and probably designed for people who want an alternative to a mouse rather than full-on art, but it's plenty good enough for a starter device. Drawing with tabs is different from pen and paper and it's not worth dropping real money on it until you've given it a real go on something like you've got there.

It depends on the person but you can get a full range of motion from small tablets too. I have a wacom small that I've had for the past year and I can work from the shoulder/elbow with ease depending on how I zoom in and out. I've very comfortable with the Small and don't see myself upgrading for a long while.

sometimes mistakes on a drawing cannot be seen because you are "too much in it" and "too proud" so you don't admit your mistakes at first. It takes me a day or two to admit some mistakes, having feedbacks from someone outside is a good way to accept the mistakes and see them ! It's not a shame for an artist to ask for feedbacks, to me it's very important to evolve in your art to learn to see mistakes even if you thought it would be good at first !

Learn to separate light and dark on a form. Start with basic shapes (cubes, pyramids, cones, cylinders, spheres) and change the direction of the light hitting the object. Learn to "ground" your object by adding a cast shadow. You can start with three values and still give the illusion of depth.

So im the Anon with the trashy tablet and i started making this and realized very quickly inkscape sucks. all I could figure out how to do was use the calligraphy tool in a couple different colors. Couldn't even find the airbrush.
It looks like shit but somehow sums up my feelings perfectly.

I'm not quite sure why DA and tumblr have such a massive boner for Paint Tool Sai - sometimes I think it's just because it's Japanese. Manga Studio / Clip Studio Paint is vastly superior in every possible way and is only more expensive by a couple of bucks.
I'm not saying Sai is bad, it's fine but it has about 15% of the functionality that Clip Studio Paint does.

I use it because its light-weight and doesn't use much resources. Learn whatever program you want. As long as you get used to its nuances it doesn't fucking matter which program you use to draw with.
