Newbie Dash is the worst episode in the entire show. It's the only episode I've watched just once, and I'd rather watch Princess Spike and What About Discord more than 100 times in a row than watch Newbie Dash ever again. I'm in the minority when I say I love the episode. It was really cute and the lesson she learned was meaningful and did stick, if you actually think about it. She stopped trying to cheat her way to her mark after that, and just settled with having fun with her friends, crusading.
Nobody was especially poorly characterized, and unless you irrationally hate AB or misunderstood the ending, there's no reason to treat it as badly as it normally is. Unless you're upset about cutie mark lore being compromised, which I personally disagree with, believing the fact that the marks were unnatural and caused by alchemy means the true function of real cutie marks wasn't contradicted at all. It was a good episode.
While I'm at it, I'll say I loved Somepony to Watch Over Me, too, which is even more hated. There's plenty of legitimately stupid things about it, and I won't try to say it's objectively a great episode, but there's more lovable and enjoyable than bad, in my opinion. Every time I watch it, I enjoy it more than I did the previous time.

It's assumed Princess Celestia knew that each of the Mane 6 was in Ponyville and she was preparing Twilight to befriend them since she was specifically scheduled to meet each of them for SSC activities. Basically it boils down to it was their destiny to meet. And each of the Mane 6 liked Twilight right off the bat, so it's no surprise they'd feel obligated to help her, and all of Equestria, by following her on her quest to get the Elements.

However, it's not uninhabitable, as Zecora proves, and Apple Bloom has always been fearless—in her first speaking role she goes into the Everfree to find Zecora when no one else will.
