I use Blender for video editing. It's a bit hard to set it up in video editor mode, but after that you can do a fuckton of stuff easily.

I'm more familiar with Premiere Pro but my advice would be to be efficient with your workflow. Look up the tools and tricks that your software can provide and if you're really dedicated invest in some hardware to speed up the flow.

I learned Sony Vegas Pro mostly on my own and only looked up simple basics for things like key-framing and the like. Every time I make a new video I try something new, the latest thing I did was a shit ton of rudimentary "animation" using frame by frame key-framing.It was placing character portraits of players from my DnD group over Samurai Jack's opening sequence since we all got flung into the future.

It's really just practice. I took a video class back in high school where I learned a bit of Final Cut Pro, but mostly how to edit video. I later used Sony Vegas and used what I learned before to help me edit.
Challenge your self to do something you haven't done before. I remember having to do a video in my senior English class. I only had 10 hours till it was due and no idea how to use Vegas. With Google and YouTube, I was able to not only complete my video, but I was able to get a good grip with Vegas.

Its literally a gig and some change but I doubt space is a problem. Ive got the Red Giant suite, Optical Flares, Trap-code suite, and some others of which I cannot remember. If you have a 32 bit system i recommend After effects cs4 which i also have.. but doubt anyone needs. I use to use that one on school computers..
It actually even comes with Photoshop already pirated inside so there is that if one could figure out where it is. I personally like to animate and such in it. Video compositing is something you could do. There are tutorial plastered all over Youtube, so theres that too.

I always found Vegas to be very comfy.
Sometimes it can lead to a pretty good results to use adobe after effects with combination of Sony Vegas, since Vegas also excels at cutting stuff. But after years of practize I really like using Vegas all the time. I was never good at organizing in it, it looks like a mess, but as long as it gets a pretty decent video done, I don't mind how messy it looks to me. I couldn't probably get used to anything else.
