Celestia seems like someone that certainly knows and has experienced friendship extensively over the years but always gives off that vibe that she doesn't have any really close friends.
My headcanon is that ponies use to see her as much more approachable a thousand years ago and that is when she had the most friendships. After the emotional hurt from loosing her sister coupled with the added weight of ruling Equestria alone for a thousand years she became more distanced and shied away from a lot of public interaction.
Now that she has her sister back and having that massive weight lifted from her she want's to make more friends but the seemingly insurmountable public image of being unapproachable makes it a bit difficult.
TLDR: She had friends a long time ago but is currently pretty much friendless.

This Anon >>27434420 is on to something. When she was a freshly-appointed Princess, it was probably easier to associate with her. She was writing her own path at that point, but then a whole sequence of things - the last of the tribal leaders dying off, Luna's banishment, her own aging beyond pony norms - increasingly reminded them of how distant she was.
I think being alone especially influenced how ponies look at her. It's a lot different when you're the sole example of your race; as long as Luna was around it was possible for ponies to compare and contrast between the two and view them as complete personalities, not summations of what it means to be a Princess.
I still think she does keep some friends - those that by chance or by fate end up getting a peek behind the curtain and seeing who she really is. But, not as many as before.
I'd think the exact opposite is true. Back in the times when Equestria was still wild - an Equestria of wrought iron, stone, and wood, when the nights were long and the winters bitter - I could see a younger, inexperienced Celestia having to play the more serious cards in her deck: more than she'd care to have done.
I mean, now she has her sister around on a nightly basis - and I could totally see her and Cadance, despite her niece being younger by far, blowing off steam by taking a break together and going fishing or something.
I mean let's not forget how she was perfectly happy to drop by Ponyville a few times just to say hi, back in the 'ei' daysi miss them.

Fun fact: actually it's quite the contrary. Bigger animals have higher temperature because they have a lower surface/volume ratio. Heat is produced by the whole body (volume), but can only be expelled through the surface (i.e skin).
Tl;dr the bigger you are, the less efficiently you dissipate heat. There are exceptions to that, but I won't bother you any longer.

I've never really paid that much attention to GoH, but from what I read here and there it's basically an attempt made by Hasbro to make ponies somehow appealing to boys too, if I'm not mistaken. Well if that's the case, my concerns are that kids may not be as autistic as we are. If there is something I clearly remember from when I was that age, is that there was a clear distinction between toys, a line that no one woud ever cross. And that line had nothing to do with quality or things like that. It was all about toys that were fit for boys, and toys that were fit for girls. Now, that was a long time ago, and I can't really say whether things have changed or not, but boys back then would never have liked a girl's toys, no matter how "cool", simply because they were for girls. I think Hasbro is placing a risky bet with this, and they are doing so because of our very existence. No one would have ever thought of that, if it weren't for the interest adult people showed for this franchise. Adult people that are not the main target for toylines.
Tl;dr, I think they are going too far. But I really hope I'm wrong, cause if they make enough money out of it, ponies will be granted us for many more years to come. And I'm pretty damn comfortable on this ride.

I personally think that it's more attempt (years late, but still an attempt) to cash in on the action-girl craze that ran through older-child/young adult pop culture for a bit. They looked at the popularity of things like the Hunger Games, Nerf's Rebelle line, etc and concluded that they could hold on to the buyers who were exiting the normal MLP age bracket by making things a bit more action-ey.
I do think you're right about there being more reasons that boys play with boys' toys and girls with girls' toys. But from what I've seen, the 'aiming for boys' thing stems purely from that one image of a boy holding one of the GoH toys. That one image may have been Hasbro testing the waters, and until I see more I think that's all it was.
It's still a risk, but I think even just the uptick in toy quality alone will serve Hasbro well.
