What worries me most is that the only meta-plot for the season seems to be "Starlight learns about friendship!", which I couldn't give a shit about.

Dunno about Starlight's ultimate purpose but as the matters currently stand, she is the main source of entertainment this season.
The opener was great because of her interactions with Spike and her old friend, the rest was just filling in and dragging it down.
Then we had No Second Prances and, once again, her interactions with Trixie made the episode while Twilight ruined scenes alost every time she appeared on screen.
What little she did in the newest episode was also a rather decent show of character compared to the rest of the cast simply playing along and serving the story to us.
I mean, there is always "Exploring Equestria!" but I think it's safe to say she's going to make or break this season as a whole.

Going to have to disagree there; I've found starlight's episodes to overall be highly underwhelming.
The premier was by far the weakest Premiere since the crystal empire (Both the cutie mark map and princess twilight sparkle were better, and ROH is STILL the best two parter yet), and no second prances was only good for trixie and that's about it.

In an effort to find a definitive way to prove that this interpretation of what is going on is correct Deutsch came up with the idea of an artificial brain that could remembere being affected by a quantum experiment. It would literally be in two minds while a photon or an electron was passing through the equivalent of the experiment with two holes... the possibility of constructing an artificial brain which has a memory operating at a quantum level, so that it can experience quantum phenomena directly. This computer could not only keep a record of experiments that it was carrying out on itself, but could also report how it felt at any moment during the course of the experiment- it could simply print out a running commentary on what was going on. Given the present rate... such a computer could probably be build well before the end of the present century. The experiments it would carry out on itself would be a little more subtle than the basic two-slit experiemnt but they would be the equivalent to the computer having a circuit withing itself that incorporated single electrons of photons going one after the other through two holes and the intelligence feeling the effects. Deutsch expects that such an intelligence would feel the effects of the particle going both ways at once as the intelligence split into "two copies of itself" (using everett's description) and then merged back into one.
