Well, all of it implied more than just his embassy. No, just his embassy had been reduced to a pile of rubble, the buildings on either side had received minor damage, the ones further away than that had none whatsoever.

And across the street Coltsly Secruity Solutions remained downright pristine.

With great care, he traipsed his way through rubble, searching for something to salavage...

He ended up with a small coffee table and a door.

Propping up the door as best be could, he sat it a respectable distance from the coffee table and took as seat behind the latter. Passing ponies looked on with confusion and derision at the changelings efforts.

For his credit, he just smiled.

The stallion smiled to himself as he leaned back in his luxury car heading towards the city, pleased as his coalition with Fawntaine Industries in Construction yet again repaired a city that had been damaged by the Titan, Chitania. And, yet again, he was being paid quite the lavish amount to do so.

>Though I must say, I didn't expect this to be so soon. It's barely been a year! Someone up there must love me.

A chirp from the massive frame beside him knocked him out of his thoughts.

He pressed a single one of the buttons, ignored the 'Fawntaine Futuristics!' symbol on the front, and waited until it was replaced by a smiling face with a crooked nose.

"There you are, Filthy! I've been trying to reach you all day!"

He smiled when he saw his wife, at least a little genuine.

"Well, we'll have to deal with it some more, I'm going to have to stay a little longer. I've got such a deal to strike with Miss Pennydrop I just can't leave!"

"Yes, but this means Diamond Tiara will have to come over as soon as possible."

The smile wavered, and reduced.

With that, the screen cut out. After it was gone, he checked and double checked that it was not on, and then let out a grumble.

He sat next to her, as close as physically possible without actually sitting on her, those short legs of his dangling over the chairs edge.

The white sheets of her hospital bed were wrapped around her in a manner most snug, ensuring maximum warmth and comfort for the Princess of Diamonds. Not that she felt it, or was even privy to Spike’s close contiguity.

“She’s… she’s not so big, she’s not tough at all! You wish to know tougher? A wayward curl! A mane that won’t obey even the most expensive of conditioners! Those, my dear, are the true things I fear! But not you! Not! You!”

Spike’s bottom lip quivered as he listened to her rant, as he listened to her pitch change depending on whether she was trying to psyche herself up or pray to Faust that he avoided the entire situation.

>Well… looks like you were heard, Rares. It, uh… you were h-heard….

He didn’t mean for his voice to crack at the end there but couldn’t help it. Not that it mattered.

Rarity had been unconscious for quite some time now, her battered, bruised and bandaged form as still as a photograph. Just looking at her was painful… seeing those heavy layers of gauze, the tangle of wires, that mask covering her beatific face that doctors told him was to help with breathing since she… since…

His throat tightened, his jaw firmed.

Since she was having trouble on her own…

He blinked rapidly, fighting back that ever-growing moisture and forcing himself to look elsewhere, like at the cooling blue of the ceiling.

“I’ll be fine… really, I will. As long as he’s not here to see… I’ll be fine…”

The voice that sounded so strikingly like Rarity’s had not come from her, but from Charity. And only now, after arriving at the very end, was Spike able to put it all together.

His gaze fell from the ceiling, darted quickly to the left to avoid the near-dead white mare on the bed, and landed on the weapon in his clutch. There was blood on it, his blood, from squeezing it so tightly.

>Ouch….

All along, since the very first thrum, she was gone to the world, only able to call out from the darkest part of her mind.

Call out to him.

If Spike had ever wondered whether it was possible to be so fueled with rage and hate that you simply bypassed both and crash-landed straight into a state of numbness, he now had an answer.

The gun had been vibrating so much due to speaking Rarity’s unconscious thoughts for so long that, truth be told, his right hand was literally numb, but he didn’t let go. This… sad as it was, this was the only way he could communicate with him, whether she knew it or not.

>…Bitch.

Normally, such an insult, especially when aimed at the Titan herself, came out with a bitter anger, but not this time. The anger was absent, leaving only bitterness. He couldn’t connect with anger right now, because every time he tried he remembered the brutal words of the stallion who very nearly killed him with a single rifle slug.

‘…you, are far below her level… a sniveling little dragon….’

The truth was harsh… which consequently explained why Applejack was the way she was half the time, annoyed and pissed off… no one wanted to hear truth when it wasn’t in their favor, and especially not right now. He wished someone would swoop in with a lie so grand that it would ease his heartache and lift him up. He wished someone would tell him that he was already strong enough, that he had this, that next time he’d show that Titan what he could do!

He twitched.

‘…you’ve got to unlock yourself…’

Brazenly, he turned to Rarity’s limp form, frowning.

>But… how? How do I do that?

The desperation was hard to miss, but Spike didn’t care. He slid from his chair and got close enough to run a gentle claw through her ruined mane, knowing she would have a fit if she saw the current state of it.

>Tell me… please? I… Rares, I really need some help here…

Charity, left behind on the chair, was silent, still for the first time that day.

And then…

“You’ve got to come to terms with it, darling. Make your peace…”

Had he reacted any faster, Spike would have snapped his own neck. As it stood, he only received a minor case of whiplash when he turned to stare at his weapon.

>Peace…?

He scrambled over to it, gingerly hefting it to his ear.

>How? With what? Rares…? C-can you hear me? Are you okay?

When he received no answer to any of his inquiries, when only haunting silence settled in, the most heinous burning overtook his eyes and he had to squeeze them shut, grit his teeth. It was all he could do to keep from roaring and possibly breathing a fire to bring down the entire-

“Protecting the ones you care about… it’s not something you can do while shouldering a never-ending burden….”

The instant Charity vibrated and he heard that voice, his eyes snapped open, a few wayward tears escaping.

“You have to make your peace with it. There can be no regrets about what you do… every single time, over every single action… You will make mistakes, and you will fail, numerous times. Accept it. Swallow it and move on. The time you waste crying, shutting yourself in, blaming yourself, in hiding… that helps no one, dear.”

When the snot came, Spike grabbed a clawful of Rarity’s bed linen and vigorously wiped his nose.

“You are indeed a protector, and a very good one. Never doubt that, darling. You, yourself, just need to believe it again. Now, show me the true strength you have… show me a smile.”

Celestia above, smiling was the very last thing Spike felt like doing, or felt like he would ever be able to do again… and it was only in that moment, when he realized he didn’t want to, was when he also realized that he could, that he had to. For both her and himself.

And so he did.

It was perhaps the most painful moment of his short life, a pain that trumped any past physical pain, when he turned around, nearly tripping over his own tail, and felt his mouth turn up in a smile waterier than anything.

He wasn’t surprised to see her smiling back at him. Somehow, thanks to a little part of his brain now kicked back to life in the best way, he knew that’s what would greet him, her small, graceful smile, clearly visible through the breathing mask.

Even unconscious, she was beautiful and strong.

“Have fun, darling….”

The gun fell silent and still, and again, Spike somehow knew it would not speak again.

And that was fine.

It had said all he needed to hear.

He took it in a trembling hand, his grip far lighter, less weighed down, and crossed over to Rarity’s bed. He chuckled softly. A part of him wanted to call the nurse to change that very obvious snot stain so she wouldn’t see it before she awoke. But he didn’t. He wanted her to see it. Because then she would know he had been there.

He brushed a stray tuft of mane aside and laid a kiss on her forehead.

>I… I know it’s not cool, to leave you with some snot-covered sheets after you just helped me but… I’mma do it. You hear me, Rares? I am. I’m gonna go have fun, enjoy protecting. I’m gonna stop agonizing over everything, I’m gonna stop second-guessing myself… I’m gonna smile more.

And his smile was indeed genuine, more real than he could recall from the past.

>So yeah… you rest. You take it easy and get better. And when you wake up? Try not to relapse back into unconsciousness when you look at yourself in the mirror, okay?

He almost laughed. Almost, but kept it in purely out of respect for other patients.

That was the only real flaw in the story I could find, otherwise it was pretty good on the whole and nice bit of character stuff for Spike. Again, the only real thing I have is that it was all about Spike, and nothing for Rarities character right now. She's the one with the biggest mix up so it was a little sad to see her kind of get relegated to just a cheerleader for him... again.

That happens a lot whenever he gets development for some reason.

Author here, and yeah, pretty much this. My main goal was to give Spike a restart, like I've been saying I would for threads now, and Rarity was the best one to do that, to make it seem natural.

The twin of that limb shook like a leaf in front of him, the cracked remains of a knife crumbling in his grasp and leaving little more than a slick toothpick left to fight.

Thankfully, it was all he needed. The two invaders were currently on the ground, neither one in any real condition to move. One of the pony's fake limbs had been broken into pieces and reduced to sparking metal, useless in it's current form. The others, though in tact, were only in slightly better shape. The dragon beside him, though he scoffed, was in only slightly better shape. His arm was laid splayed on the ground, bent in an angle that was painful to look, and the bruises on his face marred the arrogant glare.

The mare who had been sitting and watching the ordeal finally paused from her vain attempts to clean up and salvage what she could, giving the barely conscious changeling a look.

His companion winced as bones began to crack once again.

"What he means is we learned a valuable lesson about teamwork. Teamwork is important and cool."

His eye cracked open, and he gave her a look.

Had he not known her, he might have taken offense. Instead, he found himself smiling, and reclining back.

She shared a conspiratorial look, glancing at the many holes in the wall.

The changeling smiled, and his attention was drawn to a particular hole in his hooves, a hole much heavier than any of the others, and the pony mixed with machine that was going home a bit lighter than he should. His attention did not stay on that hoof for long. Other, much more interesting things took that sight away.

She got over that a loooong time ago in thread, sometime after she punked them by standing there menacingly and she was more worried she was going to hurt them then viceverse, so that one is just character development, not messing with her characterization. When she lost the fear it was a character moment during Cordycep when she realized she was scarier than they were, and she could do more damage than them. In fact, it was the first time she ever used her powers to directly attack some one, this was CordySpike.

The other one is actually a sign against her powers being unbeatable, and is staying consistent with her previous scenes with Chrysalis. In those, she accidentally keeps hurting Chrysalis whenever she swears or freaks her out, and has to fix it. With all the previous ones, she never meant to actually do it that bad, but her Chaos is not something to Discord's level where she can just snap away her problems. That it happened only after he swore or threatened someone and when she was trying to teleport is staying aligned with her previous times she lost control and had to backpeddle it.

TLDR, not fucking with characters, it's story consistency due to new developments.

Huh. That's an interesting thought, I hadn't considered that. She might acting as chill as normal as she can despite the situation simply because that's what she's been trained to do. She's literally been working with others this whole time just to get into not freaking out with her powers do, because that will make it worse. Whenever she tried to say sorry or panic before it only made it worse, it's a very good sign that she's reached the point where she can undo her mistakes without going crazy about hurting someone.

It's hard to see if they'd be Individualistic or Collectivist, since they were definitely the former before 32, but may have transitioned tot he latter afterwards, but I can still see them holding on to some individualism, so I'd say not to go with either.

Xenophile is mostly from those Morlocks we've seen above ground who seem really interested in experiencing other cultures, but it's hard to tell if they're the norm or the exception. Materialistic definitely, seeing as how the Head of Metal is really trying to get them into trade. And no way would they be Pacifistic - these are the Morlocks we're talking about, after all.

Ok, so Stellaris' Morlocks are a-go. One last thing I want to ask about...

I had this idea of doing a framing device for little silly posts from the game. The device would be Twilight having a geopolitical simulation of Equestria going on in her lab system that she forgot about with all the events happening in real life. She and AJ randomly stumble across the weird Morlock-dominated Equestria (or Ekeshtia as they call it) and try putting it in the simulator to understand how it happened.

Cue black comedy where the world literally goes up in flames, apparently in a massive war of every single major player in the world...over the last slice of cake.

Twilight sheepishly admits she may have oversimplified certain personalities. AJ is unamused.

This left the Morlocks to inherit the now rocky arid planet, slowly adapting and building up their society while fighting off the horrors that followed them up from the underground until they finally go off into space.

I'd make intermittent post of characters observing the virtual Morlocks expanding into the wider galaxy, sometimes intervening with mixed results.
