SayS only flaw is that Spike was uncharacteristically incompetent and AJ wasn't autistically following the code of her element. Besides that, Spike showed some of the best heroism about protecting his friends even if it puts his life in dangermuch more effectively than how forced and generic it was in Gauntlet of Fire I'd sayand AJ getting tired of Spike's shit, despite being outside of Spike's character to begin with, is a perfectly natural reaction toward an overbearing child that wants to insert itself into everything to make it feel more important.

Let me tell you why SayS objectively succeeded in giving him character development where GoF failed in it's try hard attempt: He had a defined and plausible reason to protect Applejack in that he was honor bound by his own personal code, whether it was an actual "dragon" code or something he invented, and he went even further beyond that where despite being lied to he still risked his life to save his friend.
As it was in GoF it was based so intangibly on "Well if I don't do it then other dragons *might* try to fuck with Equestria" and then gave the power to the generic "muh counter-culture empowerment" character in one of the cheesiest most cliched moments in the show.

I usually hate the episodes most when they actively fuck with the lore like Canterlot Wedding or MMC, since they just make future episodes worse.
However, by themselved the episodes aren't as bad as some of the other disasters we've had like Putting Your Hoof Down, where a bunch of adults act like immature children for 20 minutes, or Owl's Well and the other episodes where Spike gets abused for no reason.

The whole run of this show reminds me of a band called the grateful dead. They toured extensively for almost thirty years and played 2,318 shows. Not every night was a good night for the band. Some nights the energy was high and the show would be on fire. Other nights sucked and people couldn't wait for it to be over. But that didn't discourage upwards of 30,000-80,000 fans that would show up each night to take that gamble. So while not every episode is going to be memorable or will down right suck, occasionally they'll knock it out of the park and will make it all worthwhile.
