Scratch was painfully out of place in this episode.
Derpy doesn't stick out as much, but giving her too much focus is still a problem.
There are more reasons for this than "memes."
The whole joke for that couple minute long sequence was nothing more than "look at these characters you recognize doing what they are generally known to do." That's just lazy writing for when you can't be bothered to come up with anything actually funny to happen and doesn't actually add anything to the episode.
Sure, Derpy is cute, but she's just as cute in the background or as a minor side gag. She doesn't need to get camera focus for 20 seconds immediately after the fucking dubstep horse complete with muffled dubstep playing in the background does.
And you definitely don't get to play innocent after doing it. If you want to pander then do it. I might not like it, but I'm not in charge of the show. Just say "Yeah, we had an opportunity to throw in a bit of a treat for our older fans and we took it." If you have to try to make excuses you didn't think it was really the right thing to do in the first place.

All of Merriwether's episodes based on the fact that ponies can be really dickish towards each other and I think it worked pretty well sometimes.

Most of Merriwether's episodes were mean-spirited and out of place in this series. Pony don't have to be nice all the time, but making them into moronic cunts is not a good way to present it. Confalone is just bad at executing his episode and I doubt we will see the last of that.

The kernel of the episode definitely were the Starlight interactions which were top-notch.
Twilight's antics were really a low-point of the episode, but all around, most of the running time was focused on her and she really shined, as well as expanded a bit as a character (like, for instance, still using magic on others if she felt like it... this is one of those things Sunshit lacks as she simply went through a lobotomy between the movies).
