Starswirl was originally just a very subtle Harry Potter joke that was never planned to be brought up again. Lo and behold he's now woven into several important lore events.
Moondancer's episode wasn't planned either and came about because they wanted to expand on a 5 second scene from E1. Retroactive continuity is a beautiful thing that can lead to some of the best deepest lore moments of any show.

Cerberus left, allowing Tirek to escape, and Twilight learns of time travel magic that Starlight then modifies for her nefarious plot to mess with the M6's cutie marks, another Larson episode.
