It's a cute show, but season 6 had just in general felt pretty shit. The only episodes I didn't enjoy until this season were Daring Don't and What About Discord, but now I've barely enjoyed the majority of the things going on. On Your Marks was okay, but it was a re-hash of Bloom and Gloom. The Crystalling was pretty decent, but it focused too much on McFlurry. Overall the season has been lackluster and forgettable, not to mention out of character at a lot of moments. I hope it returns to previous cuteness quality, but so far it's not been promising.

All I want from the show as of now, is more coherent and interesting storylines. If you contrast S1's episodes with S6's, you'll notice that many of them have barely any breathing room, due to how rushed they are. Or there's a lot of superfluous scenes.

MLP was never a beloved show simply because it was a cute fun show, it was beloved because it went further than being cute and fun, it established very strong characterization to its cast, it brought a well fleshed out world for these characters to interact in, and the writing and performances have for the most part always felt at least good and engaging.
Season 6 is a train wreck, the dialogue has been very stilted and on the nose, resulting not in natural feeling conversation, but pre-planned exchanges. This contributes to a juvenile tone that the show usually retains, but at least appears self-aware and ready to reflect upon. It seems like the writing has taken a quality hit, I liked the CMC episode, but every other episode is either filled to the brim with ridiculous contrivances, poor characterization, and overly simple dialogue. This show has never been known to be quite this blatantly inconsistent.
In addition to the new story editor Josh Haber, Tim Stuby joins direction, I believe these are likely the changes that have resulted in such a dramatic shift in quality. This is the first time where major roles in the production have been replaced by people who were not around from the beginning, or close to it, to really get a solid grasp of this series tone and atmosphere. My Little Pony season 6 so far does not feel like My Little Pony, it feels stilted and dumbed down. Season 5 was my favorite season, and it's hard for me to watch this show go in the direction it's currently traversing. While I may be making assumptions because it's so early on in the season, I really hope the staff gets a grip and delivers some great episodes of horse yet again.
I think it's insulting to claim that this show is just fun and cute, and that people should just like it because of that. It's far more than fun and cute, and I think saying so really ignores the qualities that made this show such a global phenomenon in the first place.

I'd like to throw something out there.
Less is more. Undoubtedly the first two seasons were top tier, and I think part of that is because they were all we had. They gave us a basic overview, a lot of scenery and characters, a little lore, and our imagination does the rest.
I always thought that expanding beyond Ponyville would keep the show fresh and interesting. Now I'm beginning to remember that some of the best episodes took place right in Ponyville, as even this small town had lots of little nooks and crannies in it for the settings of scenes. It felt fleshed out and alive. The characters helped bring it to life. Getting to go somewhere new, like Cloudsdale or Canterlot, was a real treat. Just like it was a real treat for the ponies to get to travel. It was really homey and cozy; you got the feeling that these were little ponies in a big world, a world that couldn't be traversed in a day, and every day was like an adventure that we watched unfold over their shoulders.
The more lore we are given, the more desperately we start seeking continuity, the less mystery there is in the show's universe, and the more chances there are for contradiction in preconceived notions. It is my belief that creativity flourished in the early days, in part, because it inspired more imagination.
