This story is something that's been done hundreds of times. I know mlp isn't always known for being creative, but episodes like this give us a character that we can't come to care about because of one sad story. It takes time to relate emotionally to a character, and 15 minutes is nowhere near enough time. It's the same issue with the newest episode as well. Have a dragon that's raised in a society that has been taught not to trust others and that doing so is weak and that if you trust someone, they will screw you over? Give the writing 15 minutes to give her a 180 on her perspective to force an ending that feels wrong and change a character so quickly your head will spin. You want an example of connecting with a character and cheering her on? Watch season 1 through 3 again and watch Twilight as she grows from not understanding the needs for others to treating it as an assignment to actually caring about her friends and wanting to do things with them. Really, just watch her personality. There's a reason one of the saddest moments in the series is when Discord breaks their friendship. It's because Twilight at the start of season 2 was finally enjoying her friends and her time with them and seeing it torn away from her is heartwrenching. Or hell, even the scene of Celestia sings praise of her growth in (what should have been the show finale) season 3 finale. It's strong with feeling because we can understand a relate to what she went through as she made those friends. As she understood what it meant to enjoy someones company, to nit isolate or share herself with others. To not improve with the help of friends. These two episodes have NOTHING in comparison to other moments in the show.

I agree that what they did with this song was dumb, but the crusaders crying when they get the most happy outcome possible after all of that hardship and worry warrants it. Without Bloom and Gloom, maybe not, but the way it addressed the issue that everything would likely change once they get their marks makes this revelation that not only will they be friends forever, but their bond is so deep and important that it's the focus of their cutie marks is something worth getting emotional over.

I guess that's my main issue with everything past season 3. It felt like the end of the main 6 arc and now it's more of a world building focus where they keep introducing tons of new characters or places. You were supposed to be rooting for Twilight in the first 3 seasons. Want her to succeed in understanding the 'magic' that is friendship. Now, I don't know what to root for. I don't know who to stand behind. I don't know what the goal is. You can say it's to spread friendship across the world, but that leads to things like the dragon episode last week or the reverse lesson from Cranky Doodles episode. I just don't get where it's going and it feels lost. Plus, the adventure of exploration taking a front seat instead of sitting in the back for the episode isn't what I came for. Are there still episodes that pull off what I liked about the show? Yes. But the fact that they are now the episodes out of the norm is a sad feeling.

The entire concept of the cutie map certainly seems to go against it, at a glance. But Cranky's whole character was such that it was in his nature -- that sometimes, people just want to be left alone, and if they aren't hurting anyone, they're fine. Places like Griffonstone, Our Town, and the Hoofield-McColt valley aren't just harmless individuals, though; they're full-on failing-state dystopias, where anyone born there is damned to dysfunction, and the conflicts are built up from discrete, historical lynchpins. Moreover, they were all functional at one point, so presumably they can be again.
The belief that everything can be solved or redeemed does run contrary to what Lauren Faust intended, but on the community level, these cases are not really acts of redemption. They're simply repairing a broken base -- or in the case of Griffonstone, planting the seeds and putting it on the mend. I think Griffonstone was actually a great way of handling this, just by acknowledging that change on this scale takes time.Unless you gain the favour of a benevolent dictator like Ember, who can effect immediate change.
