>It's been a few weeks since you moved out to the Everfree. The change of scenery left you feeling refreshed.
>But Canterlot never had so many trees.
>Nor such interesting weather.
>And the air here feels... soupy. Thick with magic. Your coat prickles delicately with every breeze.

>But still, you feel unfulfilled. You had left your mother in the city with only a single note -

"Mom,

I happened upon some fascinating discoveries over the past few years. Some things fit
together like nothing I've ever seen. I don't have enough hard evidence to make any
conclusions yet, but... it's time to try them out. I've been cooped up here in Canterlot for
too long. By the time you read this, I'll be gone. Sorry. I'll be back in a few weeks, promise.
I just need a little time and fresh air...

Love,
Dewie"

>- yet in the weeks since, you've barely touched your research. Setting up life in the middle of nowhere took longer than you thought it would.
>You stare silently out the grease-spotted window of your cottage. The garden's tended to. Lunch was pretty filling, but nothing special. You're out of ways to procrastinate, and the days aren't getting any longer.

>You'd better get to work. You had moved out here for an idea - some kind of realization sitting comfortably in the back of your head.
>Everything you had learned through your school years - about magic, about life and the earth, about ponykind and science - you feel like there should be a way for it to all add up.
>But it just won't go.
>Not yet, at least.

>With a sniff of annoyance, you get up from the modest picnic table you call a dining room.
>It's time to get to work.

Every day is divided into seven sections:

Morning
Noon 1
Noon 2
Dusk 1
Dusk 2
And a double section of Night.

Every section of time, you'll have the opportunity to decide what you'd like your little pony to do. You brought many books, scientific apparatus, and magical devices out to the middle of the Everfree from Canterlot.

You like to call yourself an alchemist, but leaving the composition of delicate magical potions to chance has never really paid off for you, either figuratively or financially.

Your shack is kinda crap. You built it as fast as you could just to get some kind of shelter up. It's little more than an outhouse.

The garden has been your main focus for a few days now. Getting a steady source of fresh veggies was a great idea, though eating the same tomatoes and berries day after day gets stale fast. Additionally, you've heard plenty of stories about the wild weather of the Everfree - a little garden won't last you forever.

But your main objective here is to find some fulfilling revelation for your little pony. She's a fitful one. All the education in the world doesn't help her decide on a career when she wants to pick them all. As an earth pony, she feels particularly stressed about the fact that she doesn't seem to work as hard as others of her race.

Losing interest in her aimless quest for knowledge will leave her dejected and lazy. She won't survive the winter.

That said, the option to pack your things and return safely to Canterlot always exists. However, doing so will end the game. It also spells death for your little pony's curiosity.

Morning: Go home to Canterlot
Noon 1: Learn about your family's loss
Noon 2: Run into a hospital
Dusk 1: Talk to clerk
Dusk 2: Talk to doctor about sister's condition
Double section of Night. Whatever the fuck that means: Stand over sister, who's crying in her hospital bed after a miscarriage

How incredibly vague and unuseful. I assume we're supposed to pick what the pony has been 'putting together' and came all the way out to the Everfree to do. Anyone got any interesting ideas?

I've been trying not to write too much right away, but it looks like it takes a lot to get this story going. Slower, like this.

---

DAY 1 - NOON 1

>The cottage is a bit dusty. Dishes stack up by the slightly-filmy washbasin you call a sink.
>There's a few sets of dirty china on the dining table, too.
>They aren't going anywhere, so why worry about them, right?

>You drag yourself over to the still half-packed suitcase by your cot. You dig around for a minute or so, eventually producing a small selection of textbooks - along with a much larger selection of wrinkled, still-fresh-smelling laundry.

>Well, it's better than lying on the floor and staring at the ceiling.

>It's a peaceful, clear, sunny day. If none of these books look terribly interesting, maybe there's something more fun outside.

>Rape the maids
>Kill a Servant
>Fug Arcade

I'd assume a pony that's trying to find her thing would have already read all the books she has. At least enough to get the main ideas off them.

>It's true, you've already read these cover to cover, several times each. You always liked Zebra Arithmetic, though. Counting by units of "ancestral and/or sacrificial remains" was just so exotic.
>Instead, you decide to go outside.

>It's a beautiful day. You never really get used to the smell of the unnatural Everfree weather.
>As you stand on the couple of planks you decided was going to be a porch, you spot something moving just beyond the foliage on the far side of the clearing.
>Animals and travelers pass through there from time to time.
>You're never sure which is which. Can't see, with all the brush.

>...

>Then again, the garden always needs looking after! There are probably lots of very interesting bugs in the tomato plots!

>You forget about the passers-by for now. You're starting to get used to it, anyway.
>The garden looks a little wilted, you realize. Then again, you did just harvest it for lunch.
>Still, it never hurts to give the plants a little extra attention. You never know when it might rain next.

>Only problem is, you have no water. The last of your rainwater got drank up during lunchtime.
>You remember there being a stream somewhere in the woods nearby, but you can't remember exactly where.
>Suddenly, you find yourself wishing you had a map.

>You set down the watering pail and swap it out for an empty barrel, strapped around your back with a length of rough rope.
>Being an earth pony has its advantages.
>You also grab one of the pencils you brought with you from home and a sheet of paper.
>Time to map this place a little better.

>Which way do you strike out first? Towards the moving figures, towards the garden, or behind the house?
>>
>>27156671
Might as well go check out the figures.

>You feel a rush of courage as you gear up to look for water on your own. Inspired, you decide to check out the shadowy figures you spotted through the brush.
>Peeling back a couple fronds of some waxy plant - Vinculus bellacnidaria, you recall - you see that the road seems to be clear for now.
>Dang.
>But you remember a trick from an old survival guide - tracking. You're no expert, but you can clearly see scuffed hoofprints in the dirt leading off to your right.
>Hey, it's been a while since you talked to anyone. Maybe they'll have stuff to trade? Or a map, or have seen a stream...

>You follow the tracks hopefully for a short way. After a few minutes of peaceful strolling, you round a corner to see the figures just down the path. Two ponies walk while the third flaps lazily overhead; all three seem to be wearing archaeologists' costumes and chatting away vivaciously.

...actually, this is turning out a lot less fun than I had thought it would be. Trying to keep up with a coherent story and characters is hard enough, let alone the drawings too.

I think CYOA isn't for me. Doesn't look like I got too much of an audience anyway, but that's okay. At least I gave it a try. I'll stick to what I'm comfortable with, in just doing art without the stories all written out like this.

Thanks so much to you guys who took this seriously - I really do appreciate it - and sorry to disappoint.
>>
>>27156942
I think the biggest problem was running it when most people are asleep. I still respect you for trying and hope you have fun doing something else.
>>
>>27156942

CYOAs are hard for writefags, its even worse for people who deliver art and text
Try making the CYOA faster or wait when /mlp/'s traffic is fast, which is every weekend
>>
>>27156942
everyone is asleep man, unless you were aiming for Euros
>>
>>27156942
So you'll be doing it one piece of art a time like the beginning?

I agree, running a CYOA is harder then it looks. source:my quest
How about you take a day off, and think on it? Some ideas are bound to be good.

As for the players though, not much you can do about that depending on your timezone. I wouldn't worry about that. Advertise and players will come eventually. Even if it's just a few.
>>
>>27156942
You are aiming for euros with the time you posted + even some euros can't see that shit since it's during workhours
>>
>>27157598
This
I suggest you try again at an hour suitable for amerifats, or yuropoors.
Right now, it wasn't suitable to both.
Don't count on australians btw, nobody likes them

I'm really sorry to hear this wasn't fun for you. I wish I had the opportunity to play, too.

If I may ask, what bothered you most during your attempt? Was it the lack of activity or something else?
>>
>>27156942
Not seeing much focus here. The character seems to have come out here with some goal in mind, but we have no idea what it is. Thus far it's just faffing about and slice of life stuff.
>>
>>27159070
That was my issue. There's no goal, just 'do this thing I haven't told you about'. Everything we do is just wasting time until either a player comes up with something interesting or the QM sets a goal.
>>
The art was super cute and fast too.
>>
>>27159448
I second this.
>>
Has this been abandoned?
>>
>>27161832
I really hope not, though the QM did seem rather disenchanted.
>>
>>27161832
Yes.
>>
Come on, QM! Don't give up now, it's not even past 100 replies yet!
