while it may have been autistic, I don't think it is as bad in context.
We joke about tragedies all the time but it's not until we see a character that we care for in such a scenario that we realise.
As for myself I'm a heartless fuck that isn't bothered, but if it was a real scenario involving a pony I cared about, I'd be pretty unsettled too.

Inserting relatable characters in historical events is nothing new. The girl with the red coat in Schindler's List isn't any more real than Rainbow Dash: she's just an imaginary character put there to make people feel closer to the horrors of the Holocaust. If inserting cartoon characters instead of colorful girls in a black and white movie helps other people realizing our history, maybe it's a good thing.
