Album Info:
>What is this?
This is a project that aims to create an album of music from /mlp/. It'll be a compilation, potentially containing everything from originals, remixes, collaborations, etc. The past efforts never came to fruition, so we're trying once again. If you create music, sing, rap, create art, write lyrics, have ideas, or just want to participate, jump right in. Add yourself to the GDoc and/or please email [email protected] who you are, what you do, contact info (May include preferred email, YouTube, etc), and anything else.
>What kind of music is the album going to contain?
Basically anything is acceptable. This means complete originals, remixes, collaborations, soundscapes, etc.
>How do I submit my music/art?
Please submit a mastered/unmastered WAV or AIFF. Please upload it to a site that doesn’t compress the audio file (Like Dropbox and Mediafire. NOT Vocaroo), and then share the download link. You can also upload to OneDrive (https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=C6319434888276ED%21105. To upload, post your email in the thread or email [email protected], and we'll add you). If you don’t post in the thread, please email [email protected] so we know for sure you’re submitting something.
>What about artwork?
Yes, we can always use artists. Artwork may be needed for the album cover. individual songs, and anything else we come up with. Final versions of artwork will be submitted like music (see above).
>I HAVE MOAR QUESTIONS
If you still have questions, read the Google doc above, email [email protected], or ask in the thread.

Well, I'll be the first to post content after a fucking long time.
Working on 2 songs atm, FAME and QT Mk. Crusaders
FAME: Almost done, Anoridan is mixing now.
QT Mk. Crusaders: In raw stages, Harmonica is doing the instrumentals. He is doing a great job but i have to constantly kick his ass so he doesn't give up <3
Here some drafts.

Bumping with feedback chart. I'd love to add to it more. Hit me up with your thoughts on these two pieces so we can move towards a definitive conclusion on what needs to be changed/fixed.
Link to concept video (none of these backgrounds are final they are just placeholders): https://youtu.be/ia7VEMMuI-A
Keep up your thoughts boys. I'd like to devise a conclusion to both of these aspects to our project. So we can begin their final phases next week.

I normally don't have issues with Pro Tools, aside from it crashing occasionally when I close a sessionI mostly have problems with Avid, but every time I update it, the Focusrite driver in particular doesn't want to behave. Not sure if that's a PT or Focusrite issue.

Before I go to bedseth plsI'd like to post what I've got so far in terms of QT Mk Crusaders (>>27110770):
This is what I had for a while: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0LcJbJvPuPk
Stuff like melody and chord progression are pretty much like this. Intro, outro and solo are not set in stone, though.
It will not be a rock thing by the end of it.
This is the direction it's going now: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0Ih0mM1Hfln
This is what the whole song should sound like. Thing is, I can't piano.
Anybody have any pointers for composing simple piano?
>>27110770
>In raw stages, Harmonica is doing the instrumentalsRaw will be how your waifu feels after you've reached critical dong mass for the night.
>>27124254
On piano, try to keep every note close together. The classical rules are best for this sort of thing, mainly using stepwise motion with immediate resolution after a leap.
And after writing it, offset the velocity and timing so it's more realistic
Or ask an anon to play it
Bumps
Alright, update for jazz track
I think this will be the final version, simply because I won't have time to work on it in the next few months. Whatcha think?
http://www.mediafire.com/?4qd0t3fa2xxj5pk
It still needs a name too. Suggestion?
>>27126513
sounds like from a persona game.

Calm theme, but not gonna lie, i feel it's a little repetitive after the 3:00, i like the sax but the piano lacks of feeling.

Right, I'll follow your advice once I understand what your advice was (but, really, thank you).
>try to keep every note close together
Do you mean just going up/down the scales or not jumping the length of entire octaves or...?
>The classical rules are best for this sort of thing
Classical rules?
>mainly using stepwise motion
Same as the "keeping every note close together" bit: going up scales or sticking to the note of the chords or...?
>with immediate resolution
This, I sort of understand.
>after a leap
This, I don't.
>And after writing it, offset the velocity and timing so it's more realistic
>Or ask an anon to play it
The plan in my head was to get someone to perform it because it'd sound better than MIDI and the performer can fill in whatever gaps I can't/don't/shouldn't fill with his/her own interpretation.
Dammit Jim! I'm a Particle Physicist, not a Theoretical Musician!
>>27133679
>notes together
You should try to stay in the scale, yes. By 'leap', i mean those jumps of entire octaves. Pretty much anything greater than a third should be resolved immediately. It doesn't need to be resolved to the root note; a chord tone will do fine. Of course, you could be jumping from one chord tone to another, in which case you should move by step in the opposite direction.
Keep in mind, these are more guidelines than rules. If what you make sounds good, it is good.

Check this site out to. Pay attention to the concepts of sequences, like retrograde and inversion. They give your melody variety.
>Classical rules
This is mostly the theory used in classical music (cuz the piano is like the base instrument for classical)
>>27133837
Ah, you're talking about melody. I have more chord-playing in mind to accompany the singing (although, if you're suggesting I should re-write the melody or if the piano should play another melody on top of what I've already got...).
My most-pressing concern (that I can remember right now) is the left hand and how to compose for it: I imagine it should be playing whole chords but, right now, I've been treating it like a bass guitar and just having it do single notes.
>>27134224
Ahh, alright. Jazz harmony is better for this sort of thing. Many people, because they've listened to popular music for several generations, find it holds more weight to it. Singer-songwriters like Sarah Mclachlan, while not jazz musicians, do seem to tend for jazz harmony and rhythm more than classical.
http://jazzstandards.com/theory/harmony-and-form.htm
This site has an overview of jazz harmony, but that isn't exactly the genre you're writingbut we do have a jazz anon somewhere here don't we?
Basically, add the seventh, and usually the ninth to the chord every time. The eleventh and thirteenth may be added for a bit more power.
However, this may be a little too dissonant for the song you have right now. Maybe just stick with the seventh, and a sixth chord is always appreciatedlike Miles Davis's April In Paris
Common chord progressions are, of course, I-IV-V and I-IV-V-vi (the four chords of pop)
In jazz, you could use a ii-V-I. I like to add a sixth, so vi-iiV-I
Alternatively, you could split up the chord, playing a few notes in bass and a few in treble. Using inversions and adding the same notes an octave lower work as well.
Suspended chords are very useful, think U2 type stuff. Roses by the Chainsmokers uses a simple E maj - E suspended chords progression to great effect.
To suspend a chord, just take the third and change it to a second or fourth. You probably don't want to add any extra notes, just the root, 2/4, and 5

I didn't know that was spoilered
