Gonna have to agree. For an event that was hyped for some time, to have it written off as a "Spike can't do anything right till the last minute because everyone else was brought down to the state of a mudpony, just he can succeed" when there could have been all sorts of interesting interactions between the rivaling teams or something (continuing off of Rainbow Falls).
It was a "good" development for Spike, but definitely not a good time for it, imo.

Spike is literally the most overworked, underappreciated, shat-upon, excluded, and openly mocked character in the show. And the funny thing is, without him, Princess Twilight probably couldn't even wipe her ass.
They should have an episode where Spike disappears, and Twilight realizes how much she depended on him for everything, and how much of a piece of shit she's been to him.

Not anymore, and to be fair after McCarthy came aboard Spike became a greater focus as she has a huge bias towards Twilight and Spike, and we can see this happen again and again with the action packed storylines. And we have seen on an increase after Season 1 that Spike has become really really good as a plot device for the desired conclusion when used as a supporting character.
He isn't as much of an underdog as you think, writers just need to fix the problems and answer the questions that fans usually have, his focus is fine.
There are only 3 things that need to be done to satisfy Spikefags.
1. Have the other characters treat him more nicely or recognize his existence (Pinkie, AJ, and RD still don't really do this)
2. Clearly define his relationship with Twilight's family
3. Give him a goal to work towards outside of being Twilight's assistant (not hard with the knight/hero thing)

Twilight and Spike is a more interesting dynamic than the mane6. Considering both of them are super powered, adventurous, intelligent, brave, etc. It leads to better adventure based stories with just the two.

Spike just needs to remind them all every once in a while that he's a motherfucking dragon and he could easily kill all of them and destroy all of Ponyville and maybe even most of Equestria if he wanted to, and he will still be around thousands of years after they're dead and gone, still thinking about how they treated him in life.
